I was born and grew up in Kent, United Kingdom. I am widely traveled and I have been living in Normandy for seventeen years, studying the history of this ancient historical region, both Medieval/Middle Age and WWII. With my Anglo/Norman roots, I am passionate about both these periods and take great personal delight in passing on much that I have learned to my guests and enjoy discussions and exchanging personal ideas. I have been told that I have a friendly nature and an enthusiastic manner, I am easy to understand as I am a Native English Speaker. I worked in all of these sectors throughout the summer season of 2017 on an almost daily basis. I have Lived in Le Mont St Michel for short periods and was privileged to attend Christmas mass in the Abbey with the Monks and Sisters and dined and conversed with them. During all this time I kept up my studies both off and on-site, picking up knowledge from personal stories of guests, including a D day veterans. I am a member of the Guild Of battlefield Guides and a registered Guide in France. My Local knowledge allows me to visit sites that are less well known by non locals. Not normally permitted to give official guided tours in the Abbey of Le Mont St Michel, it is restricted to their personal guides. Low profile is the better part of valor!

Overview of your Bayeux tour

Normandy was the birthplace of probably the most famous of all dukes, William The Conqueror, but not being content with this title, he went on to meet Harold Godwinson in battle at Hastings. Head of the most powerful family in Anglo-Saxon England and recently newly crowned King thereof, and won! This tour takes you to his birthplace, Falaise castle, then on to his most strategic castle in Caen, built in 1060, after the Battle of Val-ès-Dunes in 1047, and finally the two abbeys he built with his Flemish wife, where both William and Matilda have rested for over 930 years. William's grave, marked by a marble slab, was destroyed in 1562 and the bones scattered and lost, with the exception of one thigh bone. Matilda, who died in 1083, was buried in the Choir under a slab of black marble. What better way to learn about one of the most crucial points in European history, by walking in the footsteps of the greatest General, Duke and King of the middle ages? Guilielmus Victor.

Graham was very thoughtful and engaging. At the start of the tour he asked a number of questions to help determine our preferences and knowledge about the Dukes of Normandie which tailored or personalized the tour. Plenty of bathroom breaks and a nice lunch stop location. Extremely knowledgeable about William and Mathilda and there blood line. Shared information about all the internal fighting to become and stay the Duke of Normandie and King of England.

We had a wonderful experience with Graham. He met us at the Train Station in Caen. Then he took us to my ancestral village of Airel; then to Bayeux to see the Bayeux Tapestry; then to Caen to see the Tomb of William the Conqueror and the Tomb of his wife Matilda. Graham was knowledgeable, conscientious, and considerate, and we could not have asked for a better Guide.

Graham was excellent. Extremely knowledgeable and easy to talk to. Excellent driver and knew the area well even though this was not his regular area. He was accomodative and made suggestions to revise our itinerary based on our desires and conditions of the day. Hopefully we will get back to have another tour with him.

Excellent tour. My family of 4 loved the Falais Castle, the two Abbeys, and the Bayeux tapestry. It was a full day with our very informative and friendly guide, Graham. This tour is a great introduction to Norman and French history.

Your Bayeux tour itinerary

We start this historic tour at the birthplace of William. This impressive medieval castle, built on a natural high point with natural sheer drops, Falaise Castle, the view is impressive and allows for superb photo opportunities. We then move on to the castle in Caen, the stronghold of William after his battle of Val-ès-Dunes and henceforth to become the stronghold of Normandy. This is also a very impressive structure in the heart of Caen. Our tour then continues to the two Abbeys, Abbaye Aux Hommes and Abbaye Aux Dames, built by William and new bride Matilde, to appease Pope Leo IX. A thousand years of history is all around us. These two beautiful monuments also in the heart of Caen old town, housing the remains of King William and Queen Matilde for more than 930 years. Lastly we move on to the 900-year-old Bayeux tapestry, testimony and sequence to 'The Battle of Hastings. Bayeux is the medieval capital and has many sights to see and photograph. All within 2 hours train ride from Paris.
