In the Middle Ages, Tallinn had one of the strongest and most advanced defense systems in Northern Europe. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered one of the best-preserved medieval towns in the world. On this tour, we’ll walk along the city wall and explore all its surviving sections. We’ll discuss the different types of towers and uncover the history and secrets behind the construction of the wall and its bastions. You’ll learn how people measured the distance between towers back then, why bastions were introduced, who lived in the Lower Town and who in the Upper Town, how horse thieves were punished, and what remedies were used to cure drunkenness. Don’t miss out!
- At first, I will meet you at your hotel or lodging, or if you prefer we could just directly gather at Freedom square. - After covering the gate, we'll proceed to visit Helleman's tower and wall passage. - Next, we'll be moving on along the wall to the Great Coastal Gate. - Later, we'll find ourselves walking in the direction of Kiek in de Kök tower. - Afterwards, you'll have the opportunity to see and discuss the 17-th century Bastions. - At last, we finish our tour at Town Hall square, where I'll tell you about town councillors, medieval punishments and medicine. Then I introduce you to a nice medieval tavern with old-time soup and snacks.
