My name is Rob and I have lived in Ottawa for more than 40 years. I worked here in our high tech industry which gave me a chance to travel the whole world. When I retired, I chose to stay here, but shift my focus to history. I went back to school and got a BA in History. I continue to study and learn about what has made Canada the nation it is today, and much of that happened here in Ottawa. As Canada's capital, Ottawa is rich in history. As your tour guide, my job is to provide you with that history in a way that is meaningful to you and enhances your visit to my city. If you learn something as you see the sights, and have a laugh or two, then you will leave entertained and informed and I will have done my job. The tours I do combine the sights of Ottawa with stories about how things came to be. I want to understand what you want from your tour and customize it to meet your needs. This also gives me a chance to do a little extra research and provide you with insights you can't get from a pre-scripted tour. History is my passion. As a Volunteer Interpreter at the Canadian War Museum, I've learned to apply that passion in a way that invites you to think about things perhaps a little differently. Pleae do ask lots of questions, you don't want to hear a canned spiel. Its much more fun to have a conversation, and I'm sure we'll both learn something! Don't see a tour that's right for you? Got a larger group? Contact me and we'll work something out. BA in History from University of Ottawa 2008 Volunteer Interpreter, Canadian War Museum since 2009 Queen's Jubilee Medal for Volunteering 40 years experience in high tech industry Author of self-guided tour websites Ottawa is a very walkable city and all my tours are walking tours navigable by those with mobility aids. If needed, transportation can be arranged but some sights are difficult to get to by vehicle. I can understand basic French but don't speak it.

As the capital of Canada, Ottawa has a plethora of interesting and historical buildings. Some are there because it is the capital - Parliament, the Supreme Court, museums, and embassies. Some, like Notre Dame Cathedral, go back to the city's founding before Canada was a country. There are monuments of prime ministers, heroic Canadians, events and symbols of ideals. You'll see Sir Robert Borden, the Famous Five, the National War Memorial, and even Sir Galahad! Perhaps best of all, Ottawa is visually beautiful. It's dominated by the Ottawa and Rideau Rivers and has parkways and walking trails along a UNESCO Heritage Sight, the Rideau Canal. I have lived in Ottawa for more than 40 years - studied its history and walked and biked in its splendour daily. Let me show you my city - the capital of Canada and a great place to live and enjoy life! This tour is three hours, but a shorter tour could be crafted if you so desire. Please contact me and we'll work something out. The following itinerary is customizable:
-After meeting in the Supreme Court building, we'll walk alongside the rapids of the Ottawa river. -We'll continue on to parliament hill with memorials to various prime ministers and a couple of monarchs. Along the way, I'll point out important and interesting buildings on Wellington. -Reaching Sussex, we'll see some of the oldest buildings in the city, as well as beautiful new architecture like the National Gallery. -In Majors Hill Park you'll see the 8 locks at the end of the Rideau Canal, overseen by Colonel John By who built the canal and gave the town its original name. -We'll finish up in confederation Square by the National War Memorial. Along the way there'll be ample opportunities to stop for refreshments or just bask in the nature and history.
