My name is Rob and I have lived in Ottawa for more than 40 years. I worked here in our high tech industry which gave me a chance to travel the whole world. When I retired, I chose to stay here, but shift my focus to history. I went back to school and got a BA in History. I continue to study and learn about what has made Canada the nation it is today, and much of that happened here in Ottawa. As Canada's capital, Ottawa is rich in history. As your tour guide, my job is to provide you with that history in a way that is meaningful to you and enhances your visit to my city. If you learn something as you see the sights, and have a laugh or two, then you will leave entertained and informed and I will have done my job. The tours I do combine the sights of Ottawa with stories about how things came to be. I want to understand what you want from your tour and customize it to meet your needs. This also gives me a chance to do a little extra research and provide you with insights you can't get from a pre-scripted tour. History is my passion. As a Volunteer Interpreter at the Canadian War Museum, I've learned to apply that passion in a way that invites you to think about things perhaps a little differently. If needed, transportation can be arranged but some sights are difficult to get to by vehicle. I can understand basic French but don't speak it.

Overview of your Ottawa tour
For more than a century, Canadian military history has been memorialized on the streets of Ottawa. Over that time, our feelings about war have changed dramatically. While the bronze and stone memorials remain static, what they mean to the people who gaze upon them has evolved. Sometimes, especially on Remembrance Day, there is general agreement. Sometimes, there is great controversy. This tour requires only a few blocks of walking, but it will take you across over 150 years of Canada's history. We will not only talk about the events memorialized, but also why they were memorialized, how that meaning changed over time, and how these monuments were used to symbolize things beyond the intentions of those who commissioned them. I find these memorials bring life to the history that I have studied for many years. Dry facts of dates and names are not nearly as interesting as understanding why things occurred and what changes it brought. It is this that makes history interesting and thought provoking.
