My name is Rob and I have lived in Ottawa for more than 40 years. I worked here in our high tech industry which gave me a chance to travel the whole world. When I retired, I chose to stay here, but shift my focus to history. I went back to school and got a BA in History. I continue to study and learn about what has made Canada the nation it is today, and much of that happened here in Ottawa. As Canada's capital, Ottawa is rich in history. As your tour guide, my job is to provide you with that history in a way that is meaningful to you and enhances your visit to my city. If you learn something as you see the sights, and have a laugh or two, then you will leave entertained and informed and I will have done my job. The tours I do combine the sights of Ottawa with stories about how things came to be. I want to understand what you want from your tour and customize it to meet your needs. This also gives me a chance to do a little extra research and provide you with insights you can't get from a pre-scripted tour. History is my passion. As a Volunteer Interpreter at the Canadian War Museum, I've learned to apply that passion in a way that invites you to think about things perhaps a little differently. Pleae do ask lots of questions, you don't want to hear a canned spiel. Its much more fun to have a conversation, and I'm sure we'll both learn something! Don't see a tour that's right for you? Got a larger group? Contact me and we'll work something out. BA in History from University of Ottawa 2008 Volunteer Interpreter, Canadian War Museum since 2009 Queen's Jubilee Medal for Volunteering 40 years experience in high tech industry Author of self-guided tour websites Ottawa is a very walkable city and all my tours are walking tours navigable by those with mobility aids. If needed, transportation can be arranged but some sights are difficult to get to by vehicle. I can understand basic French but don't speak it.

For over a hundred years, Ottawa's streets have been showcasing memorials in homage to our history. Nonetheless, canadian's feelings regarding them have drastically varied along the years. Dissimilar to the static state of the memorials, the meaning attributed to them by the eye of the beholder has shifted. While on certain dates, perhaps there tends be a united sentiment about them, in other times, there is a lot of dissent. This tour will start on scenic Green Island. As well as the memorials, you'll see where the Rideau River falls into the Ottawa River. The memorials on this tour will deal with events that you may not have heard of and things you did not learn at school. They will raise questions about how and when we choose to fight, and how lesser known parts of our past highlight, or question, what we believe and remember. After Green Island, we will walk down Sussex Avenue to see several more memorials. Along the way, we will pass more beautiful sceneries and some of the older buildings in Ottawa.
·Our tour will start on Green Island, where we will see: -National Artillery Memorial -Remember Flanders (John McCrae) -Ottawa Memorial to the Commonwealth Air Forces -McKenzie-Papineau Memorial Once we've covered this, we'll head to see landmarks around Grreen Island, covering: -Defence of Hong Kong Memorial -Chemical Warfare Volunteers Plaque -International Peace Garden -CANLOAN Memorial Furthermore, we will also visit: -Major's Hill Park -Colonel By Statue -Peacekeeping Memorial (Reconciliation) -Chateau Laurier Hotel -Canadian Machine Gun Corps Plaque The tour encompasses roughly 3. 5 kilometres. This itinerary could be customized upon request.
