I'm a retired academic who is passionate about the natural and cultural assets of my native province. I've conducted curated guided tours in Halifax since 2012, and also work with Road Scholar as a lecturer and guide. Nova Scotia has spectacular scenery, friendly people, and a surprisingly complex past. Prepare to be informed and entertained by Bluenose culture! Availability: Tours are offered year-round -- please check my calendar. September and October are busiest months for cruise ship visits, so book early. I can accommodate groups of up to six in my Town & Country minivan. Qualifications: PhD in Canadian History. Taught university history courses in Ontario, Nova Scotia and Washington State. Tourism Experience: Onboard historian with Clipper Cruise Line, Cruise West and Haimark, 2000-2015. Travel Experience: North America: all 10 Canadian provinces and 3 territories; U.S.A. East Coast, Pacific Northwest and Great Lakes. Europe: UK, France, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Denmark, Sweden, Czech Republic. I am a native Haligonian and Nova Scotia has been my home since 1998. Nova Scotia Class 4 (Taxi) driver's licence, Commercial General Liability insured, Nova Scotia UARB registered and licensed.

Overview of your Halifax tour

For 250 years, Halifax has played a central role in the defence of Canada. With more service members per capita than any other Canadian city, Halifax's military character is obvious. We will explore Halifax's military history in depth by visiting museums, historic sites and fortifications. Our exact route and itinerary will vary, but points of interest will typically include: - Maj-Gen Robert Ross grave and Sebastopol Monument - St. Paul's Anglican Church - Army Museum at Halifax Citadel - Naval Museum at Admiralty House - Shearwater Aviation Museum in Dartmouth - Deadman's Island (War of 1812) - York Redoubt fortifications

We had a really enjoyable time with Jay. We have been to Halifax many times, but Jay managed to take us to places we had never been before. The time flew by so fast. He was very good at asking questions and getting to know us, so that he could make good recommendations for things that we could do. We look forward to possibly going back out with him next year.

Jay is an outstanding guide his knowledge of both the history of Halifax and of course the military history of Halifax/ Nova Scotia is tremendous. My wife and I spent a wonderful 5 hours with Jay and that was not nearly enough time, we only scratched the surface. I see another trip to Halifax next year to pick up where we left off.

Jay took us on a tour of the City and also showed us Military sites in Halifax. We had an enjoyable day. I have been to Halifax many times but still learned a lot of new things on this tour. He had a comfortable and very clean van for the 4 of us to ride in. I highly recommend Jay.

Jay was knowledgeable & personable. We felt like we were being shown Halifax by a friend, not a tour guide. His SUV was clean & comfortable, with the best tasting water provided. Jay invited us to help determine what we would see based on our interests. Even though we booked a four hour tour, we were with Jay for 30 minutes extra. With rush hour traffic, we fell behind schedule, but Jay is a man of his word & made sure that we saw all that we had agreed upon. We highly recommend using Jay as a guide

We had the pleasure of having Jay as our exclusive tour guide for three days during our visit to Halifax, NS. Halifax's proud Military History and its major role in the early settlements in the Canadian Atlantic Coast are highly educational. Our experience with Jay was intellectually fun and our knowledge gained will remain with us always. Jay is an enthusiastic guide and we will highly recommend him to our friends and colleagues.
