I'm a retired academic who is passionate about the natural and cultural assets of my native province. I've conducted curated guided tours in Halifax since 2012, and also work with Road Scholar as a lecturer and guide. Nova Scotia has spectacular scenery, friendly people, and a surprisingly complex past. Prepare to be informed and entertained by Bluenose culture! I can accommodate groups of up to six in my Town & Country minivan. Qualifications: PhD in Canadian History. Taught university history courses in Ontario, Nova Scotia and Washington State. Tourism Experience: Onboard historian with Clipper Cruise Line, Cruise West and Haimark, 2000-2015. Travel Experience: North America: all 10 Canadian provinces and 3 territories; U.S.A. East Coast, Pacific Northwest and Great Lakes. Europe: UK, France, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Denmark, Sweden, Czech Republic. I am a native Haligonian and Nova Scotia has been my home since 1998. Nova Scotia Class 4 (Taxi) driver's licence, Commercial General Liability insured, Nova Scotia UARB registered and licensed.

See the effect of the world's highest tides in the Bay of Fundy. Explore the beautiful Annapolis Valley where orchards, vineyards and farms yield most of Nova Scotia's agricultural products. First inhabited by the Mi'kmaw people and a French colony in the 1600s, dramatic events immortalized by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem "Evangeline" are depicted at Grand Pré National Historic Site. The surrounding countryside is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape. Nearby wineries offer lunch and wine-tasting options.
Jay was very knowledgeable of the geography and the history of the area. He added to the enjoyment of the tour by providing a very personal flavor to the experience. He was willing to provide a custom experience showing us things that no other tour from our ship could or would. I would definitely recommend him to anyone interested in touring the area.
Jay did a wonderful job, sharing his knowledge and stories about Canada, Nova Scotia, Evangeline and the Acadians, etc. We covered lots of ground, from the Bay of Fundy to lovely vineyards. Weather wasn’t great but no impact. Jay is smart, kind and was truly anxious for us to have a great experience, which we did.
Jay, is very knowledgeable, personable and accommodating to make any tour he is guiding a great experience. This was our second tour with Jay and both tours were exceptional. You can not go wrong selecting Jay as your guide.
We had a wonderful trip with Jay this week. He is very knowledgeable about Canadian History. There's not a date something happened in Canada that he doesn't know. He is flexible, easy to get in touch with. He also has a comfortable van for the trip. Highly recommend him and would definitely do another trip with him.
My wife and I took two day tours with Jay and had a fantastic time! There are so many beautiful places to see and spots for postcard pictures. Have him take you to the Smurf houses near Hall's Harbour. Also, Jay was so accommodating to our needs. My wife has physical limitations and his vehicle was very comfortable for the mileage we covered. We highly recommend Jay's tours. Thanks, Jay!
Jay is one of the most knowable guides we have used. He taught history and so made our tour really come alive. He is also very flexible and accommodating. We have booked a second tour from him this year.
