Hello from Vienna I am a true Viennese, born, raised and living here. After I finished school, I worked at Vienna Airport and for airlines for a few years. I still find aeroplanes fascinating, but my passion has always been history. That was certainly also due to my wonderful teacher. Thank you very much, Prof. Weiss. At that time, studying history didn't really fit into my life plans. But I knew that one day I would do something with history. Well, it took a while and before I decided to turn my interest in the city and its history into a profession in 2018, I had - before I knew it - already been working at the renowned Viennese auction house Dorotheum for more than 12 years. So tourism, art and culture have been my daily occupation for more than 30 years. After two years of training, I successfully passed the official exam to become an Austria Guide in spring 2019. And since then I have taken great pleasure in guiding my guests through Vienna. Vienna, of course, is the city of the Habsburg emperors and their empresses, of Mozart, the Lipizzaners, the Sacher cake and the Danube waltz. And I love to show my guests this traditional side of my city. But for me, the interesting aspects of this city do not stop there. Quite the opposite. Because what I find particularly exciting is Vienna's more recent history - what happened after the monarchy? What was it like when Austria disappeared from the map in 1938 and became part of Nazi Germany? Life in the city during the Second World War. And how was the country rebuilt and how does modern Vienna present itself today? Tours on the outskirts of the city are as much a part of this as walks off the beaten track. As a tourist guide who is not only clinging to the "glorious imperial times" of our country, it is important for me to show how history has shaped our modern city. It may have taken me a while to find my passion. But now it's all the more fun for me to take my guests on a journey of discovery through Vienna. Let me share my enthusiasm with you. This is a 4 semester course that ends with an exam in front of a commission. I passed my exam in May 2019, so I am now allowed to work as a state-certified tourist guide. Experience with art Before I became a tour guide, I worked for 12 years in one of the most renowned auction houses in the world - the Dorotheum in Vienna. From there I was able to bring some knowledge about art into my current job. Experience in the travel industry I started my professional career at Vienna Airport. Later I worked for airlines for many years. That means I also know my way around tourism quite well. Accreditation I am authorised to guide at Schönbrunn Palace, the Sigmund Freud Museum and the Jewish Museum Vienna. Of course, you can also visit other museums that do not have any restrictions regarding guided tours with me. Due to local commercial regulations I am not permitted to drive guests in a car myself, but can of course organise a car and driver if required.

After the First World War, all that remained of the once impressive Austro-Hungarian monarchy was a small country that was hardly expected to survive. And yet the Social Democrats ruling in Vienna managed to implement unique socio-political projects in the city during the inter-war period. Join me on a walking tour through seven municipal buildings that were built between 1922 and 1933. Having grown up in a municipal building myself, I would like to take you back about 100 years on this tour. When tens of thousands of flats were built for the working class in Vienna, affordable, modern and liveable. When kindergartens and medical facilities were built for everyone and when the city gained international acclaim for its progressive social ideas. A tour away from the city centre and a look at a remarkable piece of Viennese history beyond Lipizzaner and imperial splendour. You will see, Vienna has much more to offer than our timeless classics.
Robert was amazing. He was prepared, knowledgeable, and passionate about the topic. It was very cool to learn about the Social Democratic Party’s transformative programme, the logic behind it, and the surrounding historical context while seeing social housing complexes built during that period. If you have any interest at all in Red Vienna I highly recommend Robert’s tour. It was definitely the highlight of our trip.
Robert was very knowledgeable about early history of social housing during Red Vienna era. The pace of the tour was perfect, we were well informed without being overwhelmed with facts, and Robert was a good listener and patient with our questions. The buildings he showed us have yet to be overrun with socialist tourists such as myself - this, I have been told, has become a problem with some of the more famous complexes. Finally, I appreciated that Robert grew up in social housing and so he could speak from personal experiences as well. Great tour with a good guide and person about a remedy to a problem that so many of our cities face - what more could one ask for.
We had a wonderful time with Robert on the half day Red Vienna tour. We were a group of 5 people with some young adults who were interested in learning more about this period and the accomplishments in housing. Robert's tour was fantastic - showing the housing complexes, the history and the stories of the key contributors. He has a binder that contains many original photos, timelines, and background info that really add to the sights. He was excellent at answering questions and explaining the events of this time period. I highly recommend this tour - we learned a lot and had an excellent time exploring this area of Vienna. We can't wait to return to Vienna and appreciate the city even more after Robert's tour.

Our tour with Robert was a highlight of our trip! My partner and I were visiting to explore 'Red Vienna' and are so glad to have found this. Robert was very accommodating in arranging it; more importantly he was incredibly knowledgeable and the tour well researched which made it a delight. Robert illustrates throughout with a ring-binder of interesting and amusing anecdotes, but was also great company and helped to really get a feel for life and living in Vienna. 10/10 recommend, worth every penny!
It was the highlight of our visit to Vienna. The focus of our tour was public housing of the Red Vienna era but Robert's knowledge clearly went well beyond this scope. His english is excellent as is the breadth of his knowledge of the political & social history of Vienna. He enriched the tour with a binder of stats, resources, anecdotes. A firm grasp of history, architect & art history, he was prompt/personable. He engaged thoughtfully with all questions, topics & tied it all nicely to present day Vienna.
