After the First World War, all that remained of the once impressive Austro-Hungarian monarchy was a small country that was hardly expected to survive. And yet the Social Democrats ruling in Vienna managed to implement unique socio-political projects in the city during the inter-war period. Join me on a walking tour through seven municipal buildings that were built between 1922 and 1933. Having grown up in a municipal building myself, I would like to take you back about 100 years on this tour. When tens of thousands of flats were built for the working class in Vienna, affordable, modern and liveable. When kindergartens and medical facilities were built for everyone and when the city gained international acclaim for its progressive social ideas. A tour away from the city centre and a look at a remarkable piece of Viennese history beyond Lipizzaner and imperial splendour. You will see, Vienna has much more to offer than our timeless classics.
On this tour we will look at the following topics in more detail: - the situation after 1918 - the living conditions of the broad masses - the 1919 elections and how the Social Democratic Party managed to implement its visionary project - architecture and housing - from the idea to implementation - the idea of the New Mankind - 1933, the dream ends - municipal buildings today The tour takes place outside the city centre and leads us through seven municipal buildings in an outskirt district. The meeting point is easily accessible by public transport. But I am more than happy to offer to pick you up in the city centre on request. In this case, we would then travel to the starting point together by public transport.
