Melbourne is a hugely multicultural society where more than 50% of the population are either born overseas or their parents were. Amongst this group are the the Jewish community. There is an estimated 55, 000 strong Jewish community in Melbourne . Some have come from England, Russia, Poland, Hungary, Israel, Czechoslovakians and now South Africa. This has resulted in an interesting cultural mix. Their are many beautiful synagogues (Shuls) and some we will visit on your visit. Numerous Jewish day schools as well, to suit the ultra religious, modern orthodox as well as reform. Melbourne has a new holocaust museum as well as a Jewish museum. A big variety of eateries, butcheries, and bakeries some of which we will visit. I will take you to the largest Jewish bookshop in the Southern Hemisphere . You will be awed by the huge array of Kipot; Taleism, Mezzuzot, religious books, beautiful Kiddush cups and other lovely gifts. On our way we will taste a variety of genuine boiled bagels, as good as New York .
We took two tours with Errol and both were great; 5 star or more. My comments rating the first tour were really based up on both great tours. We highly recommend Errol for both tours. He really know his was around Melbourne and is fun to be with.
Errol rates 6 stars. His knowledge of Melbourne, both secular and Jewish, is evident as he guides, as well as his friendliness and communication skills. Then, add to that his willingness to make additions and changes to the program based on our questions and comments and interests. I give Errol 6 stars.
An excellent tour guide very considerate always asking if this was okay, etc. showed us way more than I imagined. Highly recommend Errol. He had a great gift of gab . We had a lovely day with him.
My husband and I spent a great day with Errol taking in the sights of Jewish Melbourne; unfortunately, today is Easter Monday when much was closed. We did see the Holocaust Museum (Open!) which was a jolt of reality. Many Jews came to Melbourne after WW 2. Errol was extremely knowledgeable about this community. He even managed to get us a bagel and lox at Glick's Bagel Bakery! We had a lovely and informative day… thank you, Errol.
Our tour focused on Jewish Melbourne after a brief drive in the city. Our group of 4 would agree that Errol was both knowledgeable and fun to be with and I would recommend him. He shared a lot of Jewish info as we drove by some synagogues and went into St Kilda Congregation. With a little more advance planning (for security reasons), we probably could have also gone to Toorak Synagogue. We spent time at a great Jewish bookstore/gift shop, had lunch a bagel shop, and drove around some nice neighborhoods.
Although our tour didn't start until 7 pm, due to the late arrival of our ship (was scheduled for 1pm), Errol made the best of our time. Besides being informative of the Jewish scene in Melbourne he also showed us the city at night?! Quite and experience, but mostly his sense of humor and friendliness made it fantastic! "But wait! There's more!"
1. I will collect you from the cruise ship terminal, hotel, or agreed-upon meeting point. 2. Then will journey to the Jewish scene of Melbourne via the city. -Along the way, we will view the heritage-listed East Melbourne Shul; Toorak Shul; the St Kilda Shul, (The only Shul in the world named after a Saint!) -I will point out many other interesting buildings including schools; a replica 770 Lubavitch HQ; kosher shops bakeries, and eateries. -A must-visit is the "largest Jewish bookshop" in the southern hemisphere where Judaica, memorabilia, and rare talmudic books are on view. -Enjoy a meal at one of the numerous kosher eateries - a favourite is an authentic falafel and pita diner My gift to you will be some new york style, boiled bagels to nosh!
