Guide #23603
Hi, I'm Steve (Sang Gil Lee), a licensed private guide and storyteller in Korea. I was born and raised in Seoul in the late 1950s, when South Korea was still recovering from the Korean War. I've watched the city and the country transform into the dynamic, modern Korea you see today. That personal experience is something I love sharing with my guests. When I talk about Korea's remarkable transformation, I'm not simply repeating what I've learned from books. I've witnessed much of it myself. Before becoming a guide, I worked as a television producer, traveling throughout Korea and exploring the stories of its people, history, and culture. I later served as the CEO of a local government cultural agency. I also spent a year in Los Angeles as a Visiting Scholar at UCLA and have traveled to more than 15 countries. These experiences have helped me understand different cultures and perspectives. My interests go well beyond modern Korean history. As a graduate of Sungkyunkwan University, which has deep roots in Korea's Confucian tradition, and a certified educator in Korean Buddhist temple culture, I enjoy sharing the ideas and values behind what visitors see. Why were Korean royal palaces designed the way they were? How did Confucianism shape family life? Why are apartments so common in Seoul? And how have Korean food, traditions, and everyday customs changed over the generations? - These are the kinds of questions I love exploring with my guests. I also served as a young military officer in the DMZ, an experience that gives me a personal perspective on Korea's division and modern history. Whether you're interested in royal palaces, traditional neighborhoods, Buddhist temples, local markets, modern Korean life, or the DMZ, I'd be happy to design a private tour around your interests. Most importantly, I believe a private tour should feel like a conversation, not a lecture. We can slow down, change our plans, stop for coffee or local food, and spend more time on whatever interests you. I want you to feel comfortable asking questions and discovering Korea at your own pace. My goal isn't simply to show you famous places. It's to help you understand the history, culture, and everyday life behind what you see. I'd love to share my Korea with you.

This was a completely personalized all-day tour. Sang Gil did a great job of assessing our interests and making an itinerary highlighting the Joseon Dynasty, UNESCO sites and other places of interest. His discussion/presentation/guiding were very good.

We had a great 5 hour walking tour with Steve (Sang Gil). He was so pleasant and enjoyable to be with, and with great knowledge of history, customs, different neighborhoods, food and pretty much everything we discussed. He made sure we got to the Royal Palace in time to see the Changing of the Guard and took us to many local spots around Seoul. Would highly recommend a...

Sang Gil gave us a really amazing tour of the city. His bio's statement about his tours being a conversation rather than a lecture is spot-on, as our tour was full of conversations. Having lived his whole life in Seoul, his perspective was invaluable too, especially when it came to telling us about how neighborhoods and geography had changed since the 1960s. My dad also...
