Queens is the most diverse place on Earth, and has so much to offer! One Queens highlight is Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, home to the 1939 and 1964 World's Fairs. These grounds still house iconic NYC landmarks such as the Unisphere and the New York State Pavilion, and the nearby USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center (home of the US Open), as well as Citifield (home of the NY Mets). Learn history as we see the sights, while I provide historical photos and stories from the past. We'll explore the park and its landmarks and learn about the history of the two Worlds Fair it was home to, both of which were crucial in changing the infrastructure of New York City in lasting ways. We will see numerous artifacts and remnants of these Fairs. After exploring the park, we will visit the Queens Museum and its World's Fair collection. I grew up in Queens, and will show you the true local perspective and enthusiasm!
Your expedition will begin off the 7 train. From there, we will enter Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, whose acreage is larger than Central Park. My route ensures you see the best of this park, through the lens of its Worlds Fair history. * You will see iconic locations in the park, famous from film and television, including: the Unisphere, New York State Pavilion, a Jordanian artifact dating back to 120 AD, the Fountains of the Fair, the site of time capsules from 1939 and 1964, and many others. In the second half of the tour, we will explore: The Queens Museum This building dates back to the 1939 Worlds Fair and was also the original home of the UN General Assembly. We will view its Worlds Fair artifacts, and most spectacularly: the massive Panorama of the City of New York, a 1:1200 scale model of the entire city. It must be seen to be believed! Come with me and discover a part of why the borough of Queens was selected as the best tourism destination in the United States for 2015 by Lonely Planet!
