Embark on a journey through time as we explore this historic neighbourhood, where not all residents were entirely as they seemed. Some were, in fact, quite peculiar. Being a local resident for decades, I will guide you down my favourite beautiful streets bordered by over a hundred-year-old townhouses. The walk will be seasoned by sensational local stories such as that of a prominent Colonial family member gone astray, a pre-WWI murder committed in the most peculiar manner, a shocking "May/December" romance, and an infamous self-made brothel keeper who catered to the desires of mobsters, literary figures, and politicians alike. Along the way, I'll also share intriguing highlights of the Upper West Side, making sure to add all the ingredients for an unforgettable experience! Join me on this bespoke tour as we walk through a truly historic neighbourhood, where you will be regaled by tales of the most scandalous crimes that took place around here!
-In standard fashion, our tour begins outside the subway station at the intersection of Broadway & W. 72nd St. -After viewing 2 outstanding architectural anchors, we'll proceed down 73rd St. to see a building built by a prominent older businessman plus another building that housed a brothel. The outrageous story of this man and his child bride starts here. -Next is his childhood home on 75th St. & another of his residences on 81st St. -Next, we'll come across another former brothel location on 80th St. I'll share the history of an immigrant who became New York's favorite madam who ran said venues. She was famous among mobsters, Broadway producers & powerful politicians but unknown today. -As we walk, I'll share a tale in which a very unusual method was used to perpetrate a shocking set of murders. -Our stroll ends on Riverside Dr. with a gift left by a descendant of Alexander Hamilton. The story of the very poor choices he made and his fate is compelling. -Time permitting, another tale is possible. . .
