My name is Rob and I am a native New Yorker with a great love for this city, both as a dynamic place to live and for its fascinating history. I've been a history buff of the city for as long as I can remember. I was already an explorer of New York as a young teenager, the beginning of a life long affair. I am a licensed private guide in New York City offering private tours of various parts of the city. My academic background is in the study of architecture and city planning. My professional background has largely been as a photojournalist and documentary filmmaker, as well as an author of books for children. The main thread of my career is as a storyteller, and that is what I actively bring to my guide work in New York, where there are many, many stories to tell. For instance, did you know that fishing - yes, that's right , fishing - can be excellent within city waters?! We are an island and coastal city, but no one thinks of New York City and fishing in the same thought, right? It surprised me enough to make a well -received documentary about that, called Gotham Fish Tales. I became a guide because I have always loved exploring, learning and talking about the city. I'm not content to simply recite facts. Absorbing stories of the people, events and forces of history which influenced the city's development come to life on my tours. It is not just about what happened here but why, and how that influences life in today's New York. Food is another of my abiding interests and this city has incredibly good food. It is also a place where much great food can be found at very affordable prices. Like anywhere else, you have to know where to go. I will either point out where to find great food or, if you like, I can conduct special tours which bring you to some of these places. My tours require light to moderate walking, as I believe you see and appreciate much more that way. If required, I can work with vehicles as well. I look forward to meeting you and sharing my appreciation of my home town. Overview of your New York City tour

The great landmarks of midtown Manhattan are famous because they truly are unique. No trip to NYC is complete without seeing them. This tour will give you an informative overview of what I call, The Classics. They are Grand Central Station, the New York Public Library, Bryant Park, Times Square, the Broadway theater world, and Rockefeller Center. These sites will give you a view, the historical perspective, and how these legendary buildings and locales function today. On this leisurely walk, I'll fill you up with absorbing and useful information any city visitor should know. Each stop alone is worthy of a full tour, so I boil down the essence of each locale, tempting your curiosity to hear and see more. I have worked near these places and visited them my entire life. They are, in some ways like personal friends. I can share many stories about how they were conceived, have been used, and continue to evolve.

Rob is an excellent tour guide. There were four of us in our group and he ensured that we saw all the places detailed in our tour, at a comfortable pace. He is very knowledgable about the history of the area and up to date issues. We all felt this tour was one of the highlights of our trip to New York. We would definitely recommend him.

I booked the tour as a birthday gift for a German friend and her husband. So the gift turned out to be the most excellent thing I ever got: Rob must be a very authentic, very New Yorker kind of guy with amazing knowledge about everything you need to know about life, history and culture in NY. So thanks a lot, looking forward to my own tour next time!

Robert was a knowledgeable native New Yorker that shared not only historical knowledge of the city and its architecture, but personal stories that made the tour more interesting and fun. Since we had a pregnant participant and someone with limited mobility, he was conscious of that effect and allowed us to stop as often as needed to rest. During these stops he provided fun facts and historical footnotes to many of the buildings we passed along the tour. I would highly recommend Robert as a tour guide.

Robert's very pleasant and calm personality, combined with his knowledge, insights, anecdotes and stories he shared, really enhanced our NYC trip. The neighbourhoods came alive and we suspect he took us through the very best streets and sights. It doesn't hurt that Robert was a professional photographer (so he has a trained eye), or that he is an architect (so he knows buildings also from that perspective). Warmly recommended!

Our party of five including a senior and two teens ALL thought that Rob was a fabulous guide. He was on time, very informative and fun as well which is important with teens as they can easily become disinterested. We enjoyed all the historical information and felt that Rob's perspective gave us a great introduction to our first day in this great city. 10 out of 10 - highly recommended.

The perfect tour of Manhattan & Brooklyn with the perfect tour guide! Rob was very knowledgeable, a good listener, very cordial and attentive to our needs and wishes. If he were a college prof, I'd sign up for every class he taught. He showed us several maps on his iPad, gave us details about history, geography, and architecture, and transformed our fear of New York City into the desire to go again to see, experience, and learn more.
