Hello! I'm Margaret, a friendly tour guide based in York with a passion for history and over 14 years of guiding experience. My goal is to make your tour with me the highlight of your holiday! A private tour with me is not just a tour, but a true experience - and one that can be completely customised to your wishes/tastes/wants/needs/desires. Once you've booked your tour with me you'll have a direct line of communication with a local and I am more than happy to help you plan the rest of your visit to York (and even beyond). You can set the pace and tone of your tour and I'll make sure there's always time for questions, photos. . . and the occasional trip to the pub! Both my grandfather and my father worked as tour guides and, as a child, I would have been completely horrified to learn that one day I would be doing the same! But now I can't think of a better job to have. Meeting people from all over the world, uncovering secret paths and hidden gems in historical cities, telling a tale (or two. . . or twelve), and bringing the history of an area to life is true happiness for me. And there's no better place to do it than the iconic streets of York. I love helping people view famous landmarks through a different lens, revealing the fascinating stories behind seemingly mundane locations and introducing my guests to places they would never have discovered on their own. In addition to knowledge of the city of York, I have an expertise in social history, with sound understanding of the day-to-day lives of people over the past ten centuries and with a major focus on the loves, lives, and losses of all our greatest (and some not so great) Kings and Queens. I spent 2 years guiding at the Palace of Westminster and the last decade guiding the streets of Westminster, the Square Mile and York. I have worked with visitors from all walks of life, and am also experienced in guiding for children. In my spare time you will find me reading, doing quizzes, taking 1, 000 photos of my cats, drinking wine, jigsaw puzzling, or some strange combination of the aforementioned. . ! My flair for the dramatic, unending enthusiasm (despite what the weather may bring us), good sense of humour, willingness to stop at the pub, and my unending love affair with King Charles II, will all come together to help bring you a top-quality, unique, and memorable tour. If you're after a great tour guide in York, the best tours of York, the best York pub recommendations. . . or just a way to spend a few hours in York - look no further, I've got you covered! I look forward to meeting you! BA (Hons) History - London Metropolitan University ITG White Badge - Palace of Westminster Consultant - Mysteries at the Museum (The History Channel) 2 Years guiding experience within the Houses of Parliament (Palace of Westminster), including tours for VIP guests (foreign heads of state, politicians, members of the armed forces, celebrities, journalists, etc.) 14 Years guiding experience within Westminster and the City of London I am currently not leading tours inside of York Minster, Barley Hall or the Jorvik Viking Museum. However, we can explore the exteriors of the Minster and Hall in detail.

Overview of your York tour

Sometimes known as England's second city, York's tangible history goes back centuries. A one-time capital city, York was founded by the Romans, inhabited by the Vikings, destroyed by William the Conquerer, and played a key role in the Wars of the Roses and Civil Wars before finding it's place as an early railway hub and confectionery manufacturing Mecca. Come with me to explore medieval walls, stone gateways and cobbled streets. We'll visit the ruins of St. Mary's Abbey, the stunning windows of York Minster, and the iconic buildings on the Shambles. Hear about some of York's famous faces as we make our way down hidden alleyways, through beautiful gardens, and along a lovely river. See the warehouses that first brought Chocolate to the country, the remains of a Norman castle, the hub of Viking York, and the prison where England's most notorious rogues did time!
