This tour is a combination of our Highlights of Historic York and our York City Walls tour, with a lunch break in between. This is a great option for guests who are only in York for one day! Sometimes known as England's second city, York's tangible history goes back centuries. A one-time capital city, York was founded by the Romans, inhabited by the Vikings, destroyed by William the Conquerer, and played a key role in the Wars of the Roses and Civil Wars before finding it's place as an early railway hub and confectionery manufacturing Mecca. Hear about some of York's famous faces as we make our way down hidden alleyways, through beautiful gardens, and along a lovely river. See the warehouses that first brought Chocolate to the country, the remains of a Norman castle, the hub of Viking York, and the prison where England's most notorious rogues did time! We'll also walk the full city walls, including medieval the gatehouses, and take in stunning views of York from several unique vantage points.
- This walk starts at Bootham Bar and will have you walking along the walls, past the Minster, all the way to Monk Bar. - From there, we walk from Monk Bar to Foss Islands, past the Red Tower to the incredible Walmgate Bar. - From the barbican there we continue to Fishergate postern, walking past the remains of York Castle and over the River Ouse. - Picking up at Baile Hill we walk to the primary entrance to the city, Micklegate Bar, before continuing past York Railway Station back across the River Ouse and finish near the oldest surviving parts of the wall in Museum Gardens. After a stop for lunch, we will explore the following. . . - Abbey Gardens - St. Mary's Abbey - Exhibition Square - York Minster - Barley Hall - The Shambles (Diagon Alley?) - Jorvik Viking Museum - Clifford's Tower - York Castle Museum (former prison) - Before finishing on the beautiful River Ouse, or another location convenient to you! Please note this tour can be customised.
