This tour is based on the rich railway heritage of York, its colourful characters and their legacy. We shall visit the National Railway Museum, home of the National Collection of locomotives and carriages - not least the iconic Mallard - the world's fastest steam locomotive, and a Merchant Navy classic that will never set sail. I'll explain the world of gricers and wheel tappers and how to identify a Jinty. The tour includes not one station, but three - all within 200 metres! At one of them a famous man enjoyed his last cuppa on English soil. On the way we'll discover the railway hotels and their stories, as well as the magnificent headquarters building and learn about a Victorian fat cat, a famous inspiration for Dickens, and why Queen Victoria was not amused. Oh, and a Victorian Multi-storey with a difference!
On our tour we will see; - The National Railway Museum - The current and old railway stations and their surroundings - Lendal Bridge - Barker Tower - The Guildhall and river frontage - The railway Memorials - A Victorian Park and Ride - The early development of Rowntree, the makers of Kit Kat Please note this tour can be customised.
