Hello, you all. I am Chris, an experienced Yorkshire tour guide happy to offer his services to you in exploring the lovely and historic city of York. I'm a, reasonably well preserved old goth and enthusiastic amateur historian who loves travel and exploring new places myself. I can talk for hours on such delights as medieval and ancient history, architecture, folklore, dinosaurs, religious history and the evolution of men's fashions. I enjoy medieval reenactment and hitting my friends with axes and still play Dungeons and Dragons because it's brilliant. My wife supports this all with astonishing grace. I started guiding when I was a precocious ten year old, guiding my parents' friends around our home village whether they liked it or not. When I moved to York in 2001, I started guiding for a well established local company and have been guiding ever since, expanding my repertoire of tours and tales over the years. I've had the pleasure of guiding visitors of all ages and nationalities and try to make a point of not sounding like a tape recording, but responding to visitor input and the changing environment. It's always good to be able to see a building or monument through fresh eyes and there's never such thing as a foolish question. York is rightly famed as a beautiful little city brimming with historic buildings and intriguing stories of kings and soldiers, saints and sinners, murderers and martyrs. These tales entwine around beautiful medieval churches, noble houses, graceful gardens, awesome gateways and the longest city walls left in England. The famous Shambles is one if the best preserved medieval streets in Britain and most visited, but there are many other spots away from the tourist hullabaloo I'd like to show you. Hidden graveyards, unexpected views and curious carvings abound if you know where to look. And when it's all over, York has some fantastic pubs to put our feet up in and share a jar or two. One of the best things about having a private guide is that we can customise tours to meet and exceed your expectations. To show you and share with you the very best our fine old city has to offer modern tourists and curious pilgrims alike. I have 20 years experience as a Tour Guide in the fair City of York and am pleased to offer tailored works on subjects as diverse as York's Jewish Heritage and King Richard the Third. I am a qualified guide inside York Minster and can incorporate tours inside the Minster into our itineries.

Overview of your York tour

York is one of England's most popular city destinations, but it has more to offer than the Minster, walls and Shambles. This unique tour is an exploration of York's hidden side that visitors rarely see. Hidden alleyways or snickleways as they are sometimes called here. Quiet churches and quaint little buildings, oddities and mysteries as well as tales of York's less salubrious side, rogues and rebels and ladies of negotiable affection. We shall spend much of the day exploring, so the is an hour's break for food and drink. We can establish a preferred venue in advance, according to tastes.

If you're going to take a tour in York, let it be with Christopher. My adult son and I just spent a fantastic day learning the history of York with him. We went into nooks and crannies and Snickleways we never would have found on our own. We started at York Minster, then covered a ton of ground. Pre-tour he was very responsive to inquiries, and will tailor an itinerary to your liking - or, if you want him to just let loose and show you the city he loves, he'll do that too. If you love history, and totally appreciate someone who is just as, or more geeky than you about the subject, he's your man. He knows just about everything you could ever imagine about York, and is hilarious, kind, and can tell a story like no one else. It was a day more than well spent.

Chris gave us a fantastic tour of York. He worked with us in advance to customize the sites we wanted to see and to skip some stuff we weren't interested in. His depth of knowledge about this history of the city was amazing. He was also a delight just to hang out with fof the day. Highly recommend.

No matter where your interests lie - history, architecture, food - Chris will tailor the tour to your liking and share his vast knowledge. Don’t miss this opportunity!

We had arranged for 6 hours with Chris K. and were so glad we did. Chris' encyclopedic knowledge of York and British history as a whole is only exceeded by his passion and enthusiasm in presenting it. He has a clever sense of humor which resonated well with us. We can't recommend Chris highly enough to anyone wanting to get 'under the covers' of York and its ancient stories.

Christopher was energetic and enthusiastic throughout our 6-hour tour of York on a very warm day. He's a "Yorkapedia" of offbeat information about York and the royal families throughout history. He walked us through the timeline of York history--Roman, Viking, Norman and Medieval. We loved the small churches and hidden byways which we would have missed without Christoper and he was able to attach a story to each of them that gave additional color. We'd highly recommend booking a tour with Christopher!
