Hi. My name is ChrisP and thank you for taking the time to read these pages. My first visit to York with my wife changed our lives completely and forever. Following a walking tour of the city, we were so impressed by what we had seen that we made it our goal to move here, eventually fulfilling our dream and now proudly calling York our home. With our family leaving the nest (and no longer having to be Dad's taxi service!) I could develop my passion for guiding. I'd been guiding in the city for some time but could now take my research even further. You might be able to see by the tours that I offer where some of those interests lie. My other love is sport - various activities being played to questionable levels but, in the best of British traditions, I believe that taking part is more important! My tour guiding started some years ago and I have been pleased to represent different organisations and tour companies operating in the city. My experience covers a wide spectrum of visitor activity; individuals, small and large groups, and coach and railway tour parties - all from various meeting points and with quite different requirements and expectations. I have also developed a series of presentations, each based on a walking tour of the city. These are all fully illustrated and delivered to organisations and groups, including Rotary Clubs, history groups, and other local and national organisations. If you look at the tours available from me, you will see that I have included a virtual tour and would be more than happy to discuss this further should you wish. York is unique. I love the opportunity to show visitors the city; not just the obvious and traditional, but also the hidden gems which are only known to a few. I believe York embodies the very best of England - a heritage unequalled anywhere else. Should you be unable to find a tour outline to fit your needs please contact me and we can develop accordingly. We begin this tour with York's earliest beginnings - a feisty Queen, a famous Roman legion and a well-known Emperor, with the backdrop of a Roman wall and defensive tower - part of York's impressive Roman heritage. I'll explain who gave us our city's name and why many of our streets have strange names and we shall visit a few "Snickleways" which are only found in York!! And where is the Viking king's palace? On through medieval times - guildhalls, abbeys, 14th century cottages, the iconic city walls, and even a hospital which once welcomed weary travellers with beer and a fish supper! Looking at the towering Minster is a must en route to the famous Shambles to discover how it got its name and walk between its well-known 17th century buildings. Past the church with the lantern tower (why is it called that?) to journey's end at Clifford's Tower and the Eye of York to hear of an exploding cannon and see where a notorious highwayman was imprisoned.
Chris communicated well before the tour and personalized the tour based on our (my) interests, including adjusting the start and end times of the tour to avoid crowds and to assure we had time to see the places I had indicated were important to see. Would highly recommend him as your guide to historic York, including the York Minster. If his suggested tour example does not fit your interests, let him know and he will adjust the tour accordingly.
Chris met the four of us with a smile and a spring in his step as he guided us through the fascinating and often unfamiliar nooks, crannies and snickleways of York. His in-depth historical knowledge, humour and local insight led to a most pleasurable walk of discovery. He was both professional and thoughtful in manner, often going out of his way to add extra sights, insights and stories. We all thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon. I would highly recommend Chris as a tour guide if you're looking for a well-informed, interesting and entertaining tour. Chris is incredibly knowledgeable about the history of York. He took us all over the city, and included a walk on top of the walls surrounding the city. This tour would be an excellent way to get an overview of York early in one’s stay. My husband and I would strongly recommend Chris for a private walk.
