Hello, you all. I am Chris, an experienced Yorkshire tour guide happy to offer his services to you in exploring the lovely and historic city of York. I'm a, reasonably well preserved old goth and enthusiastic amateur historian who loves travel and exploring new places myself. I can talk for hours on such delights as medieval and ancient history, architecture, folklore, dinosaurs, religious history and the evolution of men's fashions. I enjoy medieval reenactment and hitting my friends with axes and still play Dungeons and Dragons because it's brilliant. My wife supports this all with astonishing grace. I started guiding when I was a precocious ten year old, guiding my parents' friends around our home village whether they liked it or not. When I moved to York in 2001, I started guiding for a well established local company and have been guiding ever since, expanding my repertoire of tours and tales over the years. I've had the pleasure of guiding visitors of all ages and nationalities and try to make a point of not sounding like a tape recording, but responding to visitor input and the changing environment. It's always good to be able to see a building or monument through fresh eyes and there's never such thing as a foolish question. York is rightly famed as a beautiful little city brimming with historic buildings and intriguing stories of kings and soldiers, saints and sinners, murderers and martyrs. These tales entwine around beautiful medieval churches, noble houses, graceful gardens, awesome gateways and the longest city walls left in England. The famous Shambles is one if the best preserved medieval streets in Britain and most visited, but there are many other spots away from the tourist hullabaloo I'd like to show you. Hidden graveyards, unexpected views and curious carvings abound if you know where to look. And when it's all over, York has some fantastic pubs to put our feet up in and share a jar or two. One of the best things about having a private guide is that we can customise tours to meet and exceed your expectations. To show you and share with you the very best our fine old city has to offer modern tourists and curious pilgrims alike. I have 20 years experience as a Tour Guide in the fair City of York and am pleased to offer tailored works on subjects as diverse as York's Jewish Heritage and King Richard the Third. I am a qualified guide inside York Minster and can incorporate tours inside the Minster into our itineries.

The Shambles in York is said to be England's best preserved medieval street, but there is much more to in what was once England's second largest City. From its origins as a Roman provincial capital, York grew to be the centre of trade, politics and faith in the North of England. This unique tour concentrates on the period of the Norman conquest when two royal castles were imposed upon the city and the Minster rebuilt, up to the Reformation when York lost its religious houses and much of its prestige. We shall be exploring not only the imposing walls and castles, but also beautiful churches and their unique stained glass as well as stately guild halls and domestic houses. I grew up loving medieval history, and still take part in reenactment battles. York's medieval past was the reason I moved there 20 years ago, and I would love to show you some of the things I love most about it.

Chris and I were like guys walking around viewing the sights and enjoying a cold day. We saw everything, with no time limitations. He is knowledgeable and easy to understand. We had hot chocolate and cake, and we went to pub. Enjoyed my first English beer. It was a pleasure.
Christopher was an absolute delight. His enthusiasm for York was infectious and he helped the city, and particularly its ancient history, come to light. He personally participates in historical reenactments and lives the history, he doesn't just parrot historical facts. The Minster was closed to the public while we were there (filming a TV series or movie), but Christopher took us to other, off-the-beaten path churches to make up for it. York was a highlight of our trip to the UK thanks to Christopher.
Chris is incredibly knowledgeable and speaks with a passion about the history of York. He answered all questions with vivid detail. Fantastic tour!
We spent a delightful and information afternoon with Chris as he showed us the highlights and history of the medieval city of York, which included many old Roman buildings. A treasure trove of knowledge of English history, Chris told the stories that helped us to understand medieval history in England. Chris has an easy, delightful personality and the afternoon went quickly. We finished with a coral concert/service at the beautiful York Cathedral and a recommendation for a good local dinner restaurant.
We absolutely loved our Wonders of Medieval York Half Day Walking Tour with Christopher Kelly. It was great fun! He is very animated, friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating. Chris clearly loves what he does and greatly enjoys working with people. We felt that we saw "everything," including little secret places known only to knowledgeable locals. He obviously knew every aspect of what he showed us. We could have easily spent a whole day with him. We give him our highest recommendation.
