The Shambles in York is said to be England's best preserved medieval street, but there is much more to in what was once England's second largest City. From its origins as a Roman provincial capital, York grew to be the centre of trade, politics and faith in the North of England. This unique tour concentrates on the period of the Norman conquest when two royal castles were imposed upon the city and the Minster rebuilt, up to the Reformation when York lost its religious houses and much of its prestige. We shall be exploring not only the imposing walls and castles, but also beautiful churches and their unique stained glass as well as stately guild halls and domestic houses. I grew up loving medieval history, and still take part in reenactment battles. York's medieval past was the reason I moved there 20 years ago, and I would love to show you some of the things I love most about it.
