Step past the monumental gates and discover the beating heart of Tunis. The Living Medina is an immersive journey designed for curious travelers who want to go beyond the postcard views to uncover the history, architectural wonders, and authentic local rhythm of this UNESCO World Heritage site. Guided by local expertise, you will look past the bustling main souks to decipher the stories written in the stones. Marvel at the intricate stucco work of hidden Ottoman palaces, admire the iconic horseshoe arches, and learn the architectural secrets behind the Medina's famous carved doors. We will step into quiet, sun-drenched courtyards that tourists often miss, offering a peaceful glimpse into traditional urban life. Along the way, you’ll connect with the soul of the city—meeting local artisans keeping centuries-old crafts alive and witnessing the daily flow of community life. This is more than a history tour; it’s an insider’s key to the living heritage of Tunis.
Meeting Point: Kasbah. We begin at the historic seat of power, introducing the medieval foundations of the Tunis Medina and the ancient citadel's legacy. The Upper Medina: Pass the Kasbah Mosque to visit a historic Madrasa: Inside this former Quranic school, discover a tranquil courtyard framed by classic horseshoe arches. Old Hostels: Step inside an atmospheric Fondouk where caravans once rested. We’ll contrast its rugged architecture with a deep-dive exploration of an aristocratic palace like Dar Lasram, admiring its refined tiling, and dramatic stucco work. The Master Craftsmen: Dive into specialized souks to meet artisans keeping traditions alive: craftsmen shaping woolen hats, perfumers blending essential oils, and berber rug weavers. Iconic Cafe Break: Take a relaxed break at an iconic café for traditional mint tea amid historic columns and tiles. Concluding on a panoramic rooftop terrace with a breathtaking view over a sea of minarets and domes.
