The Realejo is part of the historical city of Granada. Most of the visitors don't know it, because it doesn't appear in great part of the guidebooks. Nevertheless it is of great beauty and for locals it is important. Many traditions take place here. It is full of history and interesting monuments. On this tour I will take you on little paths, and squares to the most important ones of this quarter. In medieval times the last community of jews lived in this area. For one of its members there was build a statue - Ibn Tibbon. I will explain you why. But after the end of Al-Andalus in 1492 the jews were expelled by the Catholic Kings. They took over Granada and made a lot of changes. I will take you to the most important buildings and places and I will show you how live changed up to the actual day. Some traditions and profesions are lost, like the silk production, but other still exist, like the great number of guitar makers. Great guitarists buy here hand made ones.
We meet at the townhall, close to the Realejo. I will give you a general introduction to Granada and the Realejo. We will stroll through its narrow streets. It has got a lot of hidden beauties. I will show you a variety of monuments that reflect the history of Granada. There is the Royal quarter of Santo Domingo, which is part of an islamic palace of the 13th century, that belonged to the ruling dynasty. Another is the Corrala de Santiago, which was a house of normal people of the 17th century and has been converted in an university residence. La Casa de Tiros, which used to be a 16th century palace of one of the most important families of those days and has been converted into the museum of Granadas' traditions and history. Finally a chapel (Camarin del Rosario) which is known as the best example for barroque style and deeply related to the battle of Lepanto. On our way back we will see the statue of Ibn Tibbon, which was one of the most important jews of Granada. The tour ends on the Isabela square.
