Dear friends, my name is Juraj and I am a historian, a mountaineer as well as a certified tourist guide offering private tours in Bratislava, Trnava and Central Slovakia. I have been guiding tourists for more than seven years and I love the job. Cultural tourism is my main focus, however, I also offer various general tours in towns. Moreover, I love good wine, so I can take you to some really beautiful old wine cellars. I lived in Bratislava for more than 12 years, where I studied at the University and did my PhD. When not doing research in libraries, you could find me wandering through the old town cobbled streets, exploring surrounding lush forests or canoeing on the Danube. Currently, I live in Trnava, a lovely medieval town just half an hour drive from Bratislava. We could go for a walking tour or for a half-day/full-day trip to discover rich history of this small yet splendid country in the heart of Europe. My credentials: - certified tourist guide - certified Bratislava Castle guide - MA in History - PhD in Late Antique/Early Medieval History - first aid course Few explanations: - due to legal regulations I cannot guide on the trails in National Parks and in the mountains - 90% of my tours through ToursByLocals are tailor-made, so do not hesitate to contact me and ask for a tour that fits your interests - my clients are well-educated and curious travellers who ask many questions and I find it incredibly pleasant to listen to your question and interests, so our tour could take 30 minutes more than is written on the page. I do not charge extra money for that half an hour. Quite often we end up in a cafe and continue our discussions after the tour. Looking forward to seeing you in Slovakia.

Are you coming to Bratislava for the first time or looking for your first guided tour? Then this is the tour for you. I will give you a brief overview of the history of the city and tell you about its development from the time of Celts to the 20th century. You will get to hear some funny legends and stories connected to the city and learn about several famous personalities who lived in Bratislava. We will have a look at the most important monuments in the medieval town (e. g. St. Martin's Cathedral, Franciscan Church, The Old Town Hall, the Archbishop's Palace, St. Michael's Gate, etc. ) and visit some picturesque squares (e. g. The Main Square and The Hviezdoslav Square with its neobaroque Opera House). We will finish our tour in front of the art nouveau St. Elisabeth's Church (The Blue Church) situated in the heart of the so-called Franz Joseph Town. The exact itinerary depends on the weather conditions. In case of rain or cold we will stay as much as possible in courtyards, churches and cellars.

Juraj was: *communicative and timely *extremely knowledgeable in history, culture, architecture *very personable w/an easy way *invited questions *provided great dialogue *sensitive and valued what was important to us *generous with his time Inconclusive, our tour was rich in information and provided us with an inspiring overview of Bratislava and its important role in history.
Would highly recommend Juraj . He is very friendly and an extremely knowledgeable guide. Our 2 hour tour enabled us to get a feel for the city on our first day and also helped us to plan our itinerary for the rest of our city break. It was also nice to have a coffee together at the end of our tour.
Juraj was an excellent tour guide! His PhD was evident in his wealth of historical knowledge. He was very candid in answering personal questions about his remembrance of communism. When the tour was over we sat down for coffee and cake and all talked about our common experiences as parents. It was a wonderful reminder of our shared humanity and what we have in common despite the country we live in! What a great day we had!!
We were a group of 10. Our tour guide Juraj met us at the allocated location on time and he conducted the tour in a very professional way and was very knowledgeable and explained the points of interest with a lot of patience and was very polite. We recommend him to anyone visiting Bratislava.
Juraj was very ponctual on our meeting point. He knows the spots of Bratislava, speaks a very good english and has a lot of stories to tell. He was very kind and helpful also for finding restaurants. If you are interested in history - not only of Slovakia but of the whole history of Central Europe - then Juraj is YOUR Guide.
The best meeting point is in front of the Tourist Information Centre at the corner of Primaciálne námestie (square) and Klobučnícka ulica (street). - Our tour will start with the Archbishop's Palace and the Old Town Hall. It is possible to climb the Town Hall Tower that offers a lovely view of the Main Square and the oldest part of Bratislava (please note that the tower is closed on Mondays). - Afterwards we will go to the Franciscan Church, - walk down the Michalská Street and visit - St. Martin's Cathedral. - Our farewell to the Old Town will be on the Hviezdoslav Square, the social and cultural centre of the 19th and the early 20th century Bratislava. - We will walk along some winding streets, that were built over former Danube branches, and finally come to the Blue Church, the early 20th century jewel of Bratislava dedicated to St. Elisabeth of Thuringia, who was born in Bratislava. Know that I can customize the tour to fit your preferences
