Dear friends, my name is Juraj and I am a historian, a mountaineer as well as a certified tourist guide offering private tours in Bratislava, Trnava and Central Slovakia. I have been guiding tourists for more than seven years and I love the job. Cultural tourism is my main focus, however, I also offer various general tours in towns. Moreover, I love good wine, so I can take you to some really beautiful old wine cellars. I lived in Bratislava for more than 12 years, where I studied at the University and did my PhD. When not doing research in libraries, you could find me wandering through the old town cobbled streets, exploring surrounding lush forests or canoeing on the Danube. Currently, I live in Trnava, a lovely medieval town just half an hour drive from Bratislava. We could go for a walking tour or for a half-day/full-day trip to discover rich history of this small yet splendid country in the heart of Europe. My credentials: - certified tourist guide - certified Bratislava Castle guide - MA in History - PhD in Late Antique/Early Medieval History - first aid course Few explanations: - due to legal regulations I cannot guide on the trails in National Parks and in the mountains - 90% of my tours through ToursByLocals are tailor-made, so do not hesitate to contact me and ask for a tour that fits your interests - my clients are well-educated and curious travellers who ask many questions and I find it incredibly pleasant to listen to your question and interests, so our tour could take 30 minutes more than is written on the page. I do not charge extra money for that half an hour. Quite often we end up in a cafe and continue our discussions after the tour. Looking forward to seeing you in Slovakia.

Slovakia is gifted with a unique position in the centre of Europe and Bratislava is the only European Capital at the border of two other countries. Many tribes and ethnic groups settled in this area but Slavs became the winners of the two millennia long struggle for the control of ancient gates between East and West, North and South. Life at the crossroad was prosperous in peaceful times but horrible in troubled times of which many castles, fortifications and battlefields bear a silent testimony. Celts, Romans, Slavs, Magyars, Slovaks, Germans, Czechs, Jews, Turks and other nations left their footprints in this small area. It was significantly shaped by Catholicism, Protestantism, Austro-Hungarian monarchy, two centuries of long struggle against Islamic armies of Ottoman Turks, democratic Czechoslovakia and communism. We will taste all this in a one day tour. It is like our favourite meal - goulash - many ingredients mixed in one cauldron.
- pick up the the Main Train Station, port or in your hotel - guided tour of the Bratislava Castle - Celtic, Roman, Slavic, Magyar heritage - first panoramic views - Calvary - a catholic pilgrimage shrine that communists tried to erase from the local landscape - Slavin War Cemetery and Memorial - witness of a coming communist rule after WW2 - amazing views of Bratislava - lunch in a traditional Slovak restaurant in the countryside - the Devin Castle - a spectacular medieval castle on the steep rock about the Danube and the Morava Rivers' confluence. Place full of fascinating history and outstanding views. - guided tour of the Old Town with its highlights - St Martin's Cathedral, Franciscan Church, Old Town Hall, Hviezdoslav Square, Archbishop's Palace - end of the tour in the oldest cafe in Bratislava
