Pallay Punchu (full day hike)

Pallay Punchu is a unique, multi-colored mountain located in the Cusco region of Peru, famous for its striking resemblance to a traditional Andean poncho. Situated in the province of Canas, this remarkable mountain displays vibrant stripes of red, pink, purple, and white, created by different mineral deposits. The name Pallay Punchu comes from Quechua and translates to “the poncho of the mountain spirit”. The mountain’s vivid colors are the result of mineral oxidation and geological processes that have taken place over millions of years. Pallay Punchu is a relatively new tourist destination, gaining popularity following the success of other rainbow mountains in the region. From the summit, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Andean mountains, including the impressive Langui–Layo Lake.

We pick you up from the hotel in Cusco around 4:00 am and drive towards the province of Canas. The journey covers approximately 210 kilometers (130 miles) and takes about four hours. Along the way, you enjoy the captivating beauty of the Andean landscape. Upon arrival in the community of Layo, Canas, around 9:00 am, we can stop so you can have breakfast. After, we begin our hike toward the base of Pallay Punchu Mountain. The hike covers approximately 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) round trip and takes about three hours to complete. As we ascend, we will be surrounded by stunning natural colors and dramatic scenery, creating a truly unforgettable experience. After reaching the summit and enjoying the magnificent panoramic views, we begin our descent back to Layo, where you can have lunch. Finally, we return to Cusco. The return journey takes approximately four hours, with an estimated arrival time in Cusco around 7:00 p.m.
