Hi everyone, my name is Tomoko, but please call me Tommie. As a nationally licensed guide, I specialize in curated private cultural experiences that connect guests with the deeper and more authentic side of Japan. Over the years, I have come to appreciate not only Japan’s famous landmarks, but also the quiet beauty found in everyday life, local craftsmanship, regional food culture, and meaningful human connections. You may have already visited major destinations such as Tokyo or Kyoto and explored many of Japan’s iconic landmarks. While those cities are undeniably beautiful, they are often crowded with tourists. For travelers seeking a more authentic and relaxed experience, Nagoya is truly a hidden gem. With its rich samurai history, unique local food culture, and traditional craftsmanship with over 400 years of history, Nagoya offers visitors the opportunity to experience a more genuine side of Japan without overwhelming crowds. During my 14 years living abroad, I was deeply supported by the kindness and helpfulness of local people in every country where I lived. Without their warmth, my life overseas would not have been the same. Now that I have returned to my hometown of Nagoya, I feel it is my turn to give back some of the kindness and hospitality I once received from others around the world. From historic craft towns and refined local cuisine to hidden gardens and everyday traditions, I curate thoughtful journeys designed to be personal, authentic, and memorable. My hope is not simply to show places, but to create meaningful cultural connections and lasting memories for every guest who visits Nagoya.

Escape the crowds and discover a quieter side of Japan in Tokoname, a historic seaside town known for its rich ceramic heritage and timeless atmosphere. As we wander through nostalgic alleyways and artisan neighborhoods together, I’ll introduce you to the beauty of traditional craftsmanship, local creativity, and the everyday charm of this town that I personally love. Along the way, we may stop by local artisan studios, enjoy lunch at one of my favorite cafés, and take a relaxing break at a unique café full of character and warmth. Rather than simply visiting sightseeing spots, this experience is about slowing down and connecting with the gentle pace and authentic local culture that can only be found in Tokoname — one of Central Japan’s hidden gems.
We will meet at your hotel/accomodation if you are staying in Nagoya city. If not, then we will meet in front of the Tourist information center at Nagoya station. - At your hotel - Nagoya station - Tokoname station - Tokoname Pottery Footbath - Lunch at a local Favorite Cafe - Visit local artisan and shops - Cafe break in a unique hidden spot - Tokoname station - Nagoya station or your hotel (end of the tour) As with every ToursByLocals tour, this tour is of course customizable. Please contact me using the orange "message guide" button to discuss this. I’ll be happy to tailor the experience to your interests and travel style as much as possible, whether you’d like to focus more on pottery, local cafés, photography, shopping, or simply enjoying the slower pace of Tokoname.
