Stuttgart Architecture Tour – from Schlossplatz to the Weissenhof Estate

This tour is a compact journey through Stuttgart’s architectural history: Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Historicism, Art Nouveau, post-war modernism and contemporary design. We start at Schlossplatz: with a 360° panorama we “read” the different eras through proportions, materials and façades (Old/New Palace, Königsbau, Art Museum, and a view towards the Collegiate Church with a small Romanesque detail!). Then we explore modern urban architecture in the Dorotheen Quartier and Art Nouveau highlights in the Market Hall. Afterwards, we take the tram up to the Weissenhof Estate – a key landmark of Modernism and the “New Building” movement. On site, we discover clean lines, new ideas of living and the groundbreaking architecture of the 1920s (including Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe). Ideal for architects, architecture lovers, curious minds and photographers. Duration approx. 4 hours, including coffee break and public transport ride.

Start at Schlossplatz for a 360° “style reading” of Stuttgart: Old/New Palace, Königsbau, Art Museum and a view towards the Collegiate Church. Here we highlight a rarely mentioned Romanesque detail – the round-arched frieze on the southern tower – and a subtle sculptural motif linked to the medieval “Ecclesia and Synagoga” symbolism, showing how religious art once expressed hierarchy and stereotypes. We then continue through the city center to compare architectural layers from Historicism to post-war modernism, including contemporary urban design in the Dorotheen Quartier. A short stop at Stuttgart’s beautiful Market Hall highlights Art Nouveau details and atmosphere. Afterwards, we take the tram up to the Weissenhof Estate, a key landmark of Modernism and the “New Building” movement. On site, we walk through the settlement, discuss the ideas of the 1920s and see icons such as Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe. Coffee break included.
