Overview of your Shanghai tour
Shanghai and the surrounding areas of southern Jiangsu and northern Zhejiang were collectively called "Jiangnan" (the south of the Yangtze River) in ancient China, referring to the alluvial plain in the southern Yangtze River Delta. Six thousand years ago, this area was still a group of islands; early residents lived on highlands crisscrossed by waterways and traveled mainly by boat—which explains why water towns are so numerous here. Today's itinerary is rich yet compact: it includes visits to four water towns with distinctly different styles, a drive along the scenic Dianpu River, a tour of Dianshan Lake (Shanghai's largest freshwater lake) and Shanghai's oldest fishing village, as well as a stop at Qushui Garden (one of Shanghai's Four Famous Gardens). Finally, we will arrive at Panlong Ancient Town as the lights come on, wrap up the full-day tour there, and take you back to your accommodation in Shanghai.
