Explore Maui your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Maui tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Maui for every interest, including:

Nature and Wildlife tours: From December to April, join a private tour for shore-based whale watching above Ma‘alaea, then spot honu (green sea turtles) basking below the Ho‘okipa Lookout. Birders can add Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge for native stilts and ‘ae‘o, with quiet boardwalk time built into your day.

Layover tours: On a daytime connection at OGG, stretch your legs at ‘Iao Valley State Monument, grab fresh poke in Wailuku, and dip your toes at Kanaha Beach before your guide gets you back on time. Your bags can stay in the vehicle so you move light and stress-free.

Hiking tours: Hike a short segment of the Sliding Sands (Keonehe‘ehe‘e) Trail in Haleakalā for lunar-like views above the clouds, or choose the shaded Waihou Spring Loop in the Makawao Forest Reserve for cool upcountry air. Your guide will plan trail length to match your pace and handle park entry details.

Public transit is limited on Maui and sights are spread out, so most areas aren’t walkable between trailheads or beaches. Ask your local guide about chauffeured tours or tours with private transportation to keep travel smooth.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Maui inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Maui

Plan easy day trip tours that loop from your hotel and back; Maui day trips stitch together rainforests, high volcanic slopes, and classic beaches without a long move day.

Road to Hana: Wind past waterfalls, one-lane bridges, and sea cliffs, with time for short hikes, fruit stands, and safe swim spots when conditions allow; best for scenic-drive fans who like many quick stops and a full day on the road.

Haleakalā summit and Upcountry: Rise above the clouds for crater overlooks and short rim walks, then roll through Kula farms and Makawao’s art-filled streets; a smart pick if you like cooler air, wide-open views, and local food stops on your tour.

North Shore and Pāʻia: Watch surfers at Ho‘okipa, spot turtles from the lookout when they are present, and wander Pāʻia’s laid-back blocks for snacks and galleries; suits ocean watchers and photographers who prefer an unhurried pace.

West Maui coast to Kapalua and Nakalele: Trace a rugged shoreline with cliff views, lava formations, and breezy pullouts, then stretch your legs on short paths near lookout points; good for travellers who want coastal scenery without a long hike.

A private tour with a local guide is the best way to really get to know a place. Skip the crowds, follow your interests, and see a side of Maui most travellers miss.
