I was born in the NW valley of Albuquerque, High School and College. Both my parents families were the beneficiaries of land grants in Northern New Mexico, one was from the King of Spain the other Woodrow Wilson back in the 1800's so my history and culture of New Mexico goes back many generations. New Mexico is my passion, I was absent from the state for 30 years as I was employed at Boeing as a engineer making aircraft in the state of Washington. I would return to my home state several times a year during my absence and each trip involved mountain hikes and camping in Northern New Mexico to explore and experience the beauty of this state. I have hiked the highest peaks of New Mexico (Truchas, Wheeler, Jicarita and many more) on my solo adventures. The most memorable was on Wheeler Peak (13, 161') was a sunset ascent and then a moonlit descent, the other was a late December solo summit on the snow covered trail. Hiking in snow is a typical hike that I have experienced in the state of Washington hiking to the base camps on Mt Rainier, summiting Mt Adams on a two day and other day hikes on snow covered mountains of Washington. I am an outdoor enthusiast and can offer high altitude running on the mountain trails, bike tours and other exciting adventures. I was/am an active runner competing in over 500 races (of all distances) in the last 10 years. Adventures with beauty and excitement awaits!! TWA flight 260 on February 19, 1955, crashed into a canyon on the west side of the Sandia Mountains killing all 16 onboard due to bad weather & visibility. The hike is 7 miles round trip & classified intermediate/Difficult with an average grade of 12%, hiking to an elevation of 8, 536'. The hike starts at the foothills and within the first mile, we will discover the Pinyon pine, juniper, sagebrush, and cactus -- typical high desert terrain! The start of the hike is typically sunny and hot until we enter the forest and dense bush, where the temperature will drop to a comfortable temperature as we hike along a small creek. The hike itself is beautiful with the vegetation and rock formations, we will also see a panoramic view of Albuquerque. This site is uniquely special to me as I am a retired engineer for Boeing! So seeing the failures in the structure as the plane exploded is interesting and I will be able to call out structures that most people have no idea what they are viewing!
I can pick you up or meet you at the trailhead. - At the trailhead, we will hike a few hrs through cactus and typical southwest vegetation then through a forest of pine trees and brush which follows a small stream to the crash site, there we will view; a plaque memorializing the passengers and crew. - At the site scattered over a quarter-mile area between the two cliffs that the aircraft met its demise are large pieces of the Martin 4-0-4, including the piston-driven engines, the wings, the rear entry stairs along with the landing gear and tires. - We will see a panoramic view of Albuquerque. Above us, you can witness the Sandia Tram as it passes overhead! Hiking in this remote area we may enable a Bear sighting, as I have encountered on my previous hike. Please wear pants or a light jacket to protect skin from brush. A water bottle or camelback should be sufficient to keep hydrated. Don't forget the camera. Pets allowed on a leash!
