I was born in the NW valley of Albuquerque, High School and College. Both my parents families were the beneficiaries of land grants in Northern New Mexico, one was from the King of Spain the other Woodrow Wilson back in the 1800's so my history and culture of New Mexico goes back many generations. New Mexico is my passion, I was absent from the state for 30 years as I was employed at Boeing as a engineer making aircraft in the state of Washington. I would return to my home state several times a year during my absence and each trip involved mountain hikes and camping in Northern New Mexico to explore and experience the beauty of this state. I have hiked the highest peaks of New Mexico (Truchas, Wheeler, Jicarita and many more) on my solo adventures. The most memorable was on Wheeler Peak (13, 161') was a sunset ascent and then a moonlit descent, the other was a late December solo summit on the snow covered trail. Hiking in snow is a typical hike that I have experienced in the state of Washington hiking to the base camps on Mt Rainier, summiting Mt Adams on a two day and other day hikes on snow covered mountains of Washington. I am an outdoor enthusiast and can offer high altitude running on the mountain trails, bike tours and other exciting adventures. I was/am an active runner competing in over 500 races (of all distances) in the last 10 years. Adventures with beauty and excitement awaits!! I have done these hikes many times in the summer and late December (when fully covered in snow), this will be a beautiful evening hike to the summit of 13, 161' with time to watch the New Mexico Sunset. Once on the summit, we can sit and enjoy the views of surrounding communities and the Colorado mountain peaks. If you desire we can hike to the other peaks a few miles away hiking along the ridge trail. Once the moon is high enough in the sky we will descend via the moon light and flashlights. I have an attachment with the area as my father and his family grew up here, so this area was and is special to me, if we are lucky we may run into longhorn sheep up on the summit. This tour starts in Albuquerque requires 3 hr drive time and overnight accommodations (your expense) in Taos area. If we start in Taos I can customize the tour and reduce cost (obviously remove cost of travel from Albuquerque to Taos and back)
- Leave Santa Fe, around 1pm in my vehicle - Arrive at the base of the Taos ski area, hiking 2 miles to Williams Lake, the lake is nestled between high craggy peaks in a large glacial cirque - After a short stay we will then follow the old trail (cut off 3/4th a mile) or the new trail & summit the mountain, we can rest as required (be aware we start at an elevation of 1. 5miles high). Once we reach the saddle between Mt Walter and Wheeler Peak, Simpson Peak is roughly one mile away from Wheeler, we can hike to all 3 which are all over 13, 000', but an easy hike along the ridge - We will wait till the moon is high in the sky to provide light on trail, most of the trail is above the timber line. We will then enter the forest, and this is when a head lamp is required. Hiking poles optional if you think you need them. On this hike I use the aid of my dogs to keep alert of wildlife and to deter any, dogs are very friendly and know this trail well as they have been up several times.
