From the 12th century, Oxford is a growing trading town of wool, cloth and wine. The political stability and prosperity make Oxford an ideal location for intellectual development. By the end of the 13th century, Oxford is already a renown center for education attracting many students from all around the country. This is when conflicts between students and locals arises and increase dramatically. This fascinating history of conflicts between the 2 groups will last for centuries and will shape the way the city is build, it is everywhere to see if you know what to look for. It will be my pleasure to show you the clues! Visiting some of the most prestigious college such as Exeter and New College, I will give you a clear understanding of the development of the University from its rise in the 14th century, its restructuration in the 16th century, the reason of its decline in the 18th century and its modernisation in the 19th century.
