Explore the fascinating history of women who have shaped Oxford and the evolving roles of women through the ages. This tour takes you through iconic and lesser-known sites, highlighting key moments from the Anglo-Saxon period to the present day. We will cover the early influence of Anglo-Saxon women, the impact of puritanism, literacy, and the Reformation, as well as the growth of Oxford's libraries. Learn about the non-conformist and Oxford movements, suffragettes, and other forces of progress in the 20th and 21st centuries. Sites visited include university landmarks, where you'll hear stories of arts, patrons, architecture, science, and politics. You'll discover the lives of kings, queens, saints, and leading personalities, as well as social upheavals that shaped Oxford. Finally, gain insight into the experiences of female members of the university today. This tour can be customised to meet your specific interests, ensuring a personalised and enriching experience.
We begin our journey at the Natural History Museum. Scientific studies and changing values opened doors for women in academia. From there, we move to Keble College, a symbol of the push for universal education and inclusion. South Parks Road highlights trailblazing women in science and politics, including Rhodes Scholars, while we reflect on the role of women in early Anglo-Saxon Oxford, from high-born to low-born, including the patron saint of the city, Saint Frideswide. On New College Lane, we discover the rise of Oxford's intellectual and religious authority. Queen’s College, University College, and the Examination Schools. St Mary’s University Church reveals the Oxford Movement and how women found their voice despite St. Paul’s prohibition. The Radcliffe Square and Bodleian Library offer insight into the transformation of education. At Balliol College, we hear the story of a Scottish princess. We conclude at Jesus College, with a nod to a secret message in the Gargoyles.
