Oxford's dreaming spires have inspired writers and creators of many fantasy worlds, and this tour with an award-winning guide will introduce you to the places associated with the most famous - Alice in Wonderland. We will visit the spectacular college of Christ Church, where Alice Liddell and Charles Dodgson (aka Lewis Carroll) lived and Alice in Wonderland was created. We will walk down to the river where they set off on 'that golden afternoon' and the story of Alice's adventures was first told. Then we will travel through the historic centre of Oxford to see a display of Alice's possessions in the Museum of Oxford, the History of Science Museum which houses Dodgson's photography equipment, the Covered Market where they both shopped and which creatively remembers them today, the Oxford University Press which first published the books, and end at the Museum of Natural History, home to the famous dodo and one of both Alice and Dodgson's favourite destinations.
We will: - start at Alice's Shop, known in Through the Looking Glass as the 'Sheep Shop' for a reason that highly entertained Alice - walk down to the part of the Thames where Dodgson hired a boat to take Alice and her sisters up to Godstow, and made up a story to keep them amused. . . - look across at Grandpont House, home to Thomas Randall aka the Mad Hatter (probably) - take a tour of Christ Church college and see where Alice grew up, Dodgson lived all his adult life, the 'Alice window' in the Great Hall and portraits of Dodgson and Henry Liddell, the library where he worked and memorials to Alice's son and sister in the cathedral - visit a display of Alice memorabilia in the Museum of Oxford - visit the historic Covered Market, where Alice still has a presence - see Dodgson's photographic equipment in the History of Science Museum - spot Tweedledum and Tweedledee in gargoyle form - end at the Museum of Natural History where Alice and Dodgson were fascinated by the 'Oxford dodo' and many other objects
