Oxford’s intimate scale offers rare proximity to cultural gems preserved across centuries—an exceptional range of eras and techniques in situ. Twice swept by iconoclasm, Oxford became a refuge for devotional art. Scholars, with riddles, bribes, and providential warnings, protected treasures from zealots and soldiers. We’ll explore the religious origins of the colleges and movements that shaped them—from medieval monastic foundations to the 19th-century Oxford Movement. In a 14th-century college, we’ll trace medieval craftsmanship, 18th-century academic grandeur, and a dash of Victorian modesty. In a 17th-century setting, discover traces of the Northern Renaissance. At the University Church, see Gothic Revival windows inspired by sermons preached there. You'll also view Oxford’s oldest surviving stained glass and explore the deep connections between faith, art, and scholarship. Optional rail station collection and return. Customisations available.
Discover Oxford Through Stained Glass and Sacred Spaces Step into centuries of spiritual and artistic expression on a walking tour that brings Oxford’s religious heritage to life through its stained glass. From the medieval brilliance of New College to the Gothic Revival windows inspired by the Oxford Movement, you'll explore how theology, craftsmanship, and architecture shaped the city. This tour includes access to historic chapels, college cloisters, and places of worship still alive with tradition. Each stop offers a new lens—sometimes literal—on the faith, conflict, and imagination that coloured Oxford’s past. Tour themes and access tailored to your interests.
