I studied and worked at Oxford University, and still live in the city, I have a deep understanding of both 'town and gown' and I feel privileged to live in this beautiful and fascinating place. As an Oxford undergraduate, I took a degree in politics, philosophy, and economics before spending my career working in a range of UK and international organisations. My final full-time role was back at Oxford University in a senior management role. I now split my time between: non-executive and trustee roles in the health and charity sector; providing tailored tours of Oxford; cycling with my wife; and climbing and mountaineering. I love to use my deep understanding and knowledge of Oxford and its history to help visitors get the most out of their visit to the city. Before your visit, I like to build an understanding of your interests so that I can personalise the tour. A Qualified first aider A Qualified mountain leader. Full UK Driver's License. I have a full DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check clearance. None

This tour will visit some of Oxford's historic libraries so visitors can experience the environments where Oxford students and academics research and write. Oxford has nurtured an impressive array of globally significant authors, from Percy Bysshe Shelly and Oscar Wilde through to Harper Lee, Dr Seuss and of course JRR Tolkien. This tour will visit some of the sites which influenced these, and other authors. In advance of your visit I will send you a list of authors and poets with a connection to Oxford and you can select any that you would particularly like to focus on and I can customise the tour to accommodate your interests.
We will meet at pleasant bookshop cafe and over a tea/coffee discuss the day's itinerary and make final adjustments to suit your interests. The principal venues the tour will visit are as follows: - The Bodleian Library - the central library of the University. - We will join a tour to visit the most iconic parts of the library and the stunning Radcliffe Camera (date dependant). - Two classic Oxford pubs, the Eagle and Child and the Lamb and Flag, both with strong literary connections. - One of the Oxford colleges into which all students are admitted at the start of their degree. This will provide the visitor with a real insight into college life. - Visits to other colleges and places in Oxford that have influenced authors and poets. - Oxford University press, the global publishing business which grew out of the early publishing activity of the University, with the first book being published in Oxford in 1478. - We will finish at Blackwells bookshop, where students and academics buy their books.
