The small town of Belfast, located on the River Lagan, received its charter from King James I in 1613. From its origins as a modest trading town, Belfast evolved into a prominent Victorian city during the golden age of empire. Discover the history of the people who shaped the city, the workers who produced linen and built ships, and the creators of the Titanic, whose legacy endures. Explore iconic buildings and learn about emigration from Ulster to the US, with over 20 million Americans claiming Ulster-Scots roots and 30 million tracing Irish heritage. The tour concludes at the magnificent City Hall, built in 1906 to celebrate Belfast's designation as a city in 1888.
The tour begins with a view of the Titanic Quarter across the River Lagan, where Belfast's shipbuilding legacy began. Once the heart of the city's industrial revolution, this area saw the creation of the Titanic, a ship that shaped Belfast’s global reputation. Today, it’s a modern cultural hub with museums and attractions celebrating maritime history. We then explore Belfast’s Old Town, passing the historic Corn Exchange, once central to the city’s trade. At the Ulster Scots Museum, discover the heritage of the Ulster Scots community and their influence on local culture. Walking through cobbled streets, we connect with the city’s working-class past and visit historic pubs adorned with murals narrating Belfast’s turbulent history. Passing narrow entries once vital for dock workers, we may stop at St. George’s Market or visit St. Malachy’s Church. Finally, the tour concludes at the majestic City Hall, symbolizing Belfast’s transformation from an industrial hub to a vibrant, modern city.
