Kia Ora My name is Robbie and I would love to show you around my home. Except for periods overseas travelling, working on camps in America and working on cruise ships, I have lived here since I was two. It is a fantastic little city - named by Lonely Planet as "the Coolest Little Capital in the World" - with a beautiful harbour, easy to walk around and home to a thriving movie industry (of which I have been a part, working on 14 movies to date). Whenever my overseas friends visit I enjoy taking them on a "tiki-tour" around Wellington; around the Bays, up to Mt Victoria for a scenic view or, time permitting, up to the Brooklyn Windmill. If a walking tour in town is preferred, there's Te Papa Museum, the Cable Car up to the Botanical Gardens, the iconic Beehive and shopping on Lambton Quay. I am happy to adapt the itinerary and times as necessary. A small city by world standards - only 400, 000 population - but with a vibrant theatre and nightlife if that's what you're into, Wellington is also the southernmost capital in the world and the gateway to the South Island via the Cook Strait ferry. Nau mai, haere mai. Come and visit and let me show you my home. 8/7/19 PLEASE NOTE: Due to my "normal" work commitments, as of July 2019, I will need to have at least one month's notice before booking a Tour, particularly in summer. If you are wanting to book within that time-frame, please message me to check my availability. Thank you. I have lived in Wellington most of my life and I love the city. I have been fortunate to have been involved as an extra in a number of films made in Wellington's thriving movie - including the Lord of the Rings trilogy and King Kong. I have an NZTA issued Passenger Endorsement for my Driver's Licence, as well as my Private Hire Registration. I have also recently had my First Aid certificate renewed. I have recently worked for a year and a half on cruise ships based in England, during which time I enjoyed going on tours with passengers as often as I could.

Overview of your Wellington tour

A small-group, personalised Tour of the main Lord of the Rings filming sites around Wellington, with an extra from the movies. I worked on the movies over a 4 year period, as a Rohan, Gondorian, Orc, Uruk-Hai, Elf, Easterling, and in the Army of the Dead. (I am still involved in the movies here when possible; the most recent film I have worked on is Avatar 2 - released Dec 2022. ) We will visit Mt Victoria (home of the "Get off the road!" scene), drive by Stone St Studios, and go on a behind-the-scenes Wētā Workshop tour (price inclusive). In the afternoon we will head up to the Hutt Valley where we will visit Rivendell and Isengard.

Robbie was the best guide my wife and I have had the pleasure. In addition to an outstanding tour of Lord of the Ring filming sites, he regaled us with anecdotes about the filming; inside stories about his approximately 100 days as an extra, trials of filming, cast member activities between takes, etc. At the Weta Workshop, Robbie had a familiarity with the props and staff, allowing us to wear helmets and wield swords that may not have been available to other people touring Weta. Robbie treated us to an outstanding lunch and adjusted his normal tour route to see Wellington sites, such as the capital, that we had requested. Robbie met us at the ship slightly before the scheduled time and returned us comfortable before all aboard. A fantastic tour.

We had a fantastic time with Robbie on the LOTR Wellington tour. The tour is a must-do if you are a LOTR fan - Robbie has a near-endless supply of anecdotes from his extensive time on-set as a LOTR extra, the Weta tour is phenomenal, and the filming locations we hit were quite interesting (including locations for Rivendell, Isengard, the Shire, and more). You also get to learn a good deal about Wellington more generally, and Robbie was always happy to answer any questions we had, whether LOTR-related or otherwise. Finally, Robbie was affable and a great hang for the day. We can’t recommend this tour enough!

Robbie was an outstanding tour guide! Because it was our first day in the city, he made sure we saw the sights as well as many LotR filming locations. He was very knowledgeable of all things Tolkien. It was very interesting to hear about the movie magic. His book of movie photos and memorabilia helped to illustrate the importance of each location. It was great hearing behind the scenes stories of Robbie as an extra in the films. Lunch was delicious and scenic. It was truly a magical day!

We had a fantastic tour with Robbie! As an extra for the Lord of the Rings, he is the consummate insider with great stories about the filming and intimate knowledge of the sites. Robbie is also very warm and friendly with a great sense of humor. In addition to the Rings tour, we visited the Weta Workshop which is wonderful. Robbie also took us for an excellent local lunch, and provided us with great insight into the Kiwi culture and history. Highly recommend Robbie as your guide in Wellington!

Robbie was terrific! He was so very knowledgeable and very enthusiastic about telling us about the filming sites around Wellington. He was very flexible because we had changed our mind about doing something and we wanted to go to the museum instead and he didn't even hesitate in fact, he was very knowledgeable about the museum. I thought that Robbie did a wonderful job and I was very impressed with his vast knowledge! Do not hesitate to book him. He's wonderful!

Taking this tour was one of the best parts of our first-time trip to New Zealand. Robbie was amazingly personable and knowledgeable, and it was so cool to hear stories of the filming of the movies from an insider. He didn't just talk about LOTR, he truly shared his love of his home. We learned about local flora and fauna, Maori history and culture, and a little history of Wellington. My only wish was that I had taken even more photos. I was so busy talking and walking, I didn't stop to take a lot of photos. Would 11/10 recommend Robbie's tour!

Your Wellington tour itinerary

I will meet you at your accommodation or cruise ship and we will first head to Mt Victoria to see where some of the earliest scenes for LotR were shot (including the famous "Get off the road!" scene). We will also go to Mt Victoria lookout with its 360deg views of Wellington city and harbour. We will drive by Stone St Studios before visiting the Wētā Cave where you will go on a behind-the-scenes Workshop tour. After this we will have a quick stop for food at a local cafe, before we head out to the Hutt Valley for Rivendell and Isengard locations. The order of the Tour may vary with the availability of Workshop tours.
