For me, Maya history is not just something I study — it is part of my family history. I am the great-grandson of Francisco May Pech, one of the Maya leaders of the Caste War in Quintana Roo. I was born and raised in southern Quintana Roo, surrounded by jungle, milpas, local traditions and the Maya language. This is the region I have called home all my life. When I take you to an ancient Maya city, I don't want you to leave with only dates, names and photographs. I want you to understand the people who built it, the jungle that surrounds it, and how that history is still connected to the people who live here today. My tours are private and flexible, shaped around your interests and your pace. I especially enjoy traveling with curious people — those who ask questions, notice wildlife along the way, want to spend a little longer exploring something that catches their attention, or simply prefer a conversation to a rehearsed tour script. Whether we are exploring Costa Maya, Bacalar, Chetumal or the ancient Maya cities of southern Quintana Roo, my goal is to give you more than sightseeing: context, conversation and a local perspective that helps the place make sense. Explore Chacchoben at your own pace on a private shore excursion from Costa Maya. We’ll travel inland through the tropical landscape of southern Quintana Roo to this ancient Maya city, where I’ll guide you through key monuments such as Structure 24 and the Great Basamento. My goal is not just to give you dates and names, but to help you understand the people who built Chacchoben, the jungle around it, and how Maya history is still connected to life in this region today. Along the way, keep an eye out for wildlife such as agoutis, birds and, occasionally, spider monkeys. Want to make more of your day? If your ship schedule allows, you can request an extended version with a stop at a local beach club in Mahahual. The beach extension adds time and has a different price, so please contact me before booking for a customized version.
Your Costa Maya tour itinerary
After meeting you in Costa Maya, we’ll drive approximately one hour inland to Chacchoben. Along the way, I’ll introduce you to southern Quintana Roo, its history and everyday life in the region. At Chacchoben, I’ll guide you through the main areas of the archaeological site, including Structure 24 and the Great Basamento, with time to explore, ask questions and enjoy the surroundings at your own pace. Before leaving, we’ll stop at the service area, where you can use the restrooms and browse the local souvenir shops if you wish. We’ll then return to Costa Maya with enough time planned around your ship’s schedule. If you choose the extended version of the tour, we’ll continue to a local beach club in the Mahahual area for some time by the Caribbean Sea before returning to port.

I will be waiting for you just outside the Costa Maya entrance, standing on the central sidewalk with a sign displaying your name. From there, we’ll walk together to the vehicle, board, and begin our journey to Chacchoben. I could also pick you up from your hotel if you were lodged in Costa Maya.
