Sumidero Canyon is one of the most amazing natural wonders of Mexico. Its slopes reach as high as 1000 m (3300 ft) and the abundant wildlife includes cormorants, herons, vultures, giant iguanas, caymans and spider-monkeys.

During the tour you'll take a spectacular boat ride through the deepest part of the canyon making stops in the most interesting spots including Sea Horse Cave, Cave of Colors and Limestone Christmas Tree. Sumidero Canyon is one of the deepest geological faults in the world! It is in a National Park that is a Protected Natural Area and a RAMSAR site.

From the viewpoints located on top of the canyon you'll get a good bird's eye view of the gorge, however, to really experience it you must take a boat tour on the river that runs through the canyon. Sailing surrounded by tropical forest and wildlife, the Canyon and its enormity will leave a lasting impression on you.

This natural wonder which is the emblem of Chiapas is also wrapped in romantic stories and legends that few local guides like me know how to demystify.

Near the Canyon is the Colonial city of Chiapa de Corzo which bears titles of Historical Monuments Zone, Heroic City and Magic Town; therefore, I believe is the best scenario to talk about regional history, culture and traditions.

This city is also the cradle of great marimba players and artisans and is the venue of a festivity considered by all of us, the chiapanecos, The Great Party of Chiapas.

The Sinkhole of Parrots is a chasm 140 meters deep and 160 in diameter known for house thousands of Mexican Green Parakeets (Psittacara holochlorus) an endemic and endangered species, and also for its signs of early human presence; there are many cave paintings that evidence hunter/gatherers habitation in the area 7, 500 years ago.

The performance of the parrots fluttering around a prehistoric pictorial stage setting will surprise you.

El Aguacero (The Downpour) Waterfall is a set of waterfalls that spill over one side of La Venta River Canyon, through lush green vegetation tumbling down mossy terraces and flowing into the river running below. This tour in San Cristobal includes a walking tour around the city center and around its main plaza: a fine place to sit and watch life happen around you or get inside its main colonial buildings like the Cathedral or the Santo Domingo Church.

The adventure begins with the ride on 4×4 truck. Hold on as we take a picturesque dirt road in the mountains where you can enjoy the views of the cane fields in the lowlands and La Angostura River on the horizon.

Upon arrival, we will walk approximately 400m to reach the river and the base camp area. Local adventure guides will take us from the tranquility and beauty of the forest to experience the different combinations of emotions in the river where you will test your own limits.

The main activity is canyoning (walking, swimming, sliding and climbing in the river) with adrenaline-filled jumps from the waterfalls of 1 to 7 meters high. After the main part you can test yourself in a rappelling activity, a descend of 40 meters next to the waterfall with a rope. Dare to live this experience!

Filled with emotions we will have a small lunch and relax in the hammocks under the shade listening to the sound of the forest and the waterfalls before boarding our 4x4 to take the ride back to the town.
