The Miramare castle is a majestic 19th-century mansion, built for Maximilian of Habsburg, brother of the emperor Francis Joseph, on the tip of a promontory overlooking the sea. Maximilian lived here with his wife Charlotte, daughter of the King of Belgium only about 4 years before setting off to Mexico to be crowned as Emperor.
