Hi, my name is Francesco. I would like to welcome you to my warm and welcoming Emilia Romagna. I was born and raised in Ravenna but I have lived in Bologna for many years. I am a tour guide and a tour leader with a regular license and since I am a professional wine taster I have chosen to tell my territory giving great importance to the food and wine aspect. First of all I would say that I feel like a traveler. I have had travel experience on almost every continent. As a traveler, I like to blend in with the local people and learn from them the secrets of the place visited. In every place I visit then, I love to taste the local delicacies. Overview of your Ravenna tour

If you want to get to know Ravenna in an half-day tour, this is certainly the one for you! Ravenna is the city where I was born and raised and where I took my first steps as a certified tour guide. This tour is primarily cultural, informative and with an in-depth look at the main monuments of the late Roman and Byzantine periods and mosaic art. We will visit some of the most beautiful monuments of early Christian history recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites. My husband and I had an amazing experience in Ravenna with Francesco. He offers two tours in Ravenna, one focused on food and one focused on art, but we wanted to go in depth on both. So we booked both tours and he combined them together to make an amazing full day tour for us. First of all, he’s a local and knows the history of the area and has wonderful insights into all of the mosaics. So we learned a lot and enjoyed all of the tastings and visually stunning places he took us for the day. His communication before booking the tour was great, he was very responsive to my questions using Tours By Locals messaging. He met us right on time and we enjoyed every minute of our tour with him. I highly recommend Francesco for any art and food tour in Ravenna or Bologna, and we look forward to reaching out to him next time we are in Italy again.

The perfect morning in Ravenna! I highly recommend Francesco. His depth of knowledge is remarkable. We met at the train station it was a short walk to Sant Appollinare Nuovo. Francesco explained the church's architecture & art history of the mosaics. To understand more about the mosaics he talked about the politics of the time, the differing views of Christianity& the symbolic meanings. Francesco shares all this in a personable & engaging manner. We had lots of question which led to good discussions. Francesco next brought us to a church where the floor has been raised several times over the centuries. Much to my husband's satisfaction Francesco conversed with him about the engineering required. He also gave us more insight into the settlement & growth of Ravenna as an important city historically. I'd love to say more about Dante's tomb and San Vitale but there's no room!

Francesco gave us an excellent, informative tour of the mosaics in Ravenna. He alerted us to it being a particularly busy and crowded time in those sites because of school groups this time of year and he got us skillfully through the crowded sites without being pushy. He kept us on schedule without rushing us snd he took our pictures several times! We highly recommend Francesco for an enriching, informative visit and we will request him again if we are here or in his main site of Bologna.

Your Ravenna tour itinerary

- Meeting point at the train station or at your accomodation in Ravenna - The first monument we will visit, where you can also stop to make or ask for tickets will be the Church of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, a UNESCO Heritage Site, which contains beautiful mosaics of the Goths and Byzantine period. - Outside there we will have a look to a modern mosaic workshop - Dante Alighieri's tomb and discover his relationship with the city in the so-called "zone of silence". - The Neonian Baptistery , dated first half of the fifth century. - Piazza del Popolo, the main square of the city - With a further walk of about 10 minutes we will reach the final point of our tour: Mausoleum of Galla Placidia and the Basilica of San Vitale. The tour, lasting about 3 hours, will end at the Basilica of San Vitale.
