Italy can be considered a widespread museum, due to its extraordinary richness of history, monuments, archaeological sites, and as an archaeologist I am eager to enhance public understanding and appreciation of this historical and cultural heritage. After graduating in Conservation of Cultural Heritage, I obtained a Specialization in Archaeology from the University of Bologna and a PhD in Archaeological Science from the University of Padua. In the last decade I have held archaeology courses for lifelong learners, taught Roman Archaeology and Art History to undergraduate students at the University of Bologna and designed and led educational tours exploring archaeological sites and museums throughout Italy. Through my commitment and enthusiasm the number of participants to my courses and tours has increased over the years. We have visited Etruscan necropolises and ancient Roman towns, travelling through the ages to investigate social and historical processes, exploring great rulers or reconstructing the everyday life of ordinary people in the cities destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. I began working as a licensed tour leader in Ravenna and Bologna due to my fondness and passion for history and archaeology and I would be happy to share my expertise and knowledge with you. I was born in Ravenna and I feel fortunate to live in this small yet charming town, renowned for its well preserved, amazing Byzantine mosaics. In Bologna, where I studied archaeology, I had the opportunity to experience all the cultural wealth of a town whose architectural and art history heritage is as rich and various as its gastronomic traditions. I hope you can join me on my small guided tours, which have been limited to no more than 8 people, with the aim of offering a detailed and personal experience. The tours have been thoughtfully designed in order to provide you with an insight into the history and culture of these cities: you will learn, experience, taste their beauty! Bachelor’s Degree in Cultural Heritage Conservation, University of Bologna Postgraduate Specialization in Classical Archaeology, University of Bologna PhD in Archaeological Sciences, University of Padua Licensed Tour Guide since 2014 Tenured Teacher of Italian and History at a Secondary School I am not a driver. I can arrange for a separate car and driver.

Overview of your Ravenna tour

I have always been fascinated by the ancient world. I have spent many years in studying and researching archaeology and today I am an eager ambassador to my town and its treasures, glad to share with people my passion and knowledge. This tour will provide you with an insight into the past of this small, charming town, from the brief but intense heyday as Capital of the Roman Empire to the Goth and Byzantine domination. S. Vitale and Galla Placidia and their exceptionally well preserved mosaics; the House of the Stone Carpets, whose mosaic floors date from the Roman and Byzantine period. The early Christian Neonian Baptistery and the mosaics inside. The nearby archiepiscopal museum, filled with treasures, including S. Andrew's chapel and its sixth-century mosaics. the Goth king Theoderic, whose memory survives in the glittering mosaics of S. Apollinare Nuovo.

Angela is an experienced guide who really knows Ravenna and the ancient history of the town and the Church. She made these mosaics come alive for the listener. She was charming and patient on a really hot day and her enthusiasm for the subject was very evident. Thank you.

This was an exceptional experience. Our guide demonstrated commanding academic knowledge of the complex history of Ravenna. She brought a unique perspective of the geopolitical influences surrounding Ravenna. She tied this to ecclesiastical and artistic elements that led to the developments to the incredible mosaics and architectural monuments that we saw on this excursion If you are looking for a guide to give you an appreciation of the "essence" of Ravenna, Angelalea is that guide
