My name is Dimitrios and I'm a Licensed, Qualified Tour Guide, who's been involved in Tourism since 2013. I was born and raised in Meteora-Kalambaka, where my family has lived continuously since the 18th century. I'm a passionate scholar and lover of history and art, plus a deep connoisseur of Meteora. I love to share my knowledge of Greek culture and introduce visitors to my homeland, discussing our geological phenomenon as well as the construction and art of our monasteries. I organize special historical, religious, cultural and hiking guided tours for small or large groups in these monasteries, offering special routes dedicated to introducing monastic life, the frescoes and architecture of the 14th -16th centuries in order to present the history, religion and traditions of Greece to visitors. I graduated from the National Tourist Guides College in Thessaloniki (two & a half years of professional formation with course subjects: history, art history and archaeology). In addition, I studied for another two & a half years at the college of Religious Tourism & Pilgrimage Tours, devoting myself to go more in depth in the religious art of the Middle Ages. From 1993, I started studying Byzantine painting and I maintain a traditional icon painting and restoration workshop in Meteora. Therefore, I have been passionately involved in the study of medieval art. Tours can also be tailored considering a variety of factors. From group size (I offer from private tours to school groups) to age (whether it be for high school students, college students, elderly people, etc. ) and interests (to focus more on the historical, archaeological, or else). All my tours can be customized according to your requests. Embrace the beauty of Meteora discovering the culture of the monastic life and the medieval period with me as your guide. You will partake in an experience that goes beyond the ordinary. Enjoy every aspect of your stay in Greece! The Monastery of Varlaam, the second largest monastery in Meteora, is steeped in history and offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Located in proximity to the Great Meteoro Monastery, this remarkable site was founded in the mid-14th century by a dedicated monk named Varlaam. In approximately 1350, Varlaam successfully ascended the steep cliffs of Meteora, accompanied by a few fellow monks. Together, they established what we now recognize as the Varlaam Monastery. However, the story of the Monastery of Varlaam did not end there. In the early 16th century, two visionary brothers from Ioannina, Theophanes and Nectarios, also known as the Apsarades, revitalized this abandoned sanctuary. They devoted many years to restoring the monastery, culminating in the construction of a new chapel dedicated to “All Saints” in 1541. Visiting the Monastery of Varlaam provides not only spiritual inspiration but also breathtaking views and a unique opportunity to connect with centuries of monastic tradition.
