Secret societies in China have a history of over two thousand years. In early times, they were utopian. Under harsh living conditions and political oppression, people believed a god would appear to judge the wicked and save the good. In modern China, the two major national secret societies were Hongmen and the Green Gang. Both played an important role in helping Sun Yat-sen overthrow the Qing Dynasty. In Shanghai’s semi-colonial, semi-feudal society, criminals joined the Green Gang and gained key positions in the concession police. They soon controlled almost all entertainment, gambling, and the drug trade. One Green Gang leader achieved the highest status among global gangsters, second only to Lucky Luciano of the United States. Today we will systematically review this history chronologically and from a macro perspective. This tour offers the most scholarly introduction to secret societies in China and Shanghai.
