I woke to roosters instead of traffic, helped with harvests, shared meals with the family, and laughed through my clumsy attempts at Cantonese. By the early 1990s I knew Hong Kong was where I belonged. I settled here permanently and worked in the export industry, meeting overseas customers and helping close deals. Yet I quickly discovered the part I enjoyed most wasn’t the negotiations - it was stepping away from the office to show clients the city I had come to know so well. On weekends I began offering casual tours, treating everyone like a friend I wanted to welcome properly. Those outings -wandering neighbourhoods, stopping for street food, and chatting about life - were far more rewarding than any confirmed order. As my own business grew, I made sure every client visit included time exploring Hong Kong together. I realised I was happiest when I could turn a simple walk into a story: pointing out how a tiny temple sits peacefully beside towering buildings, or sharing a funny memory from my farm days while enjoying dim sum.
