For me, Maya history is not just something I study — it is part of my family history. I am the great-grandson of Francisco May Pech, one of the Maya leaders of the Caste War in Quintana Roo. I was born and raised in southern Quintana Roo, surrounded by jungle, milpas, local traditions and the Maya language. This is the region I have called home all my life. When I take you to an ancient Maya city, I don't want you to leave with only dates, names and photographs. I want you to understand the people who built it, the jungle that surrounds it, and how that history is still connected to the people who live here today.
