Hello, I am Seiya Maegawa, National Certified Tourist Guide of Japan. I was born and raised in Shiga Prefecture, neighboring Kyoto, and I currently live there. I obtained my tour guide certification in 2020 and have been working as a freelance guide mostly for the past three years. During this time, I have guided approximately 500 groups, both private and large groups, primarily in Kyoto, Nara, and Osaka, as well as Kobe and Himeji, Mt. Koyasan offering personalized and memorable travel experiences throughout the Kansai region. Before becoming a tour guide, I spent over 30 years working for a Japanese precision machinery manufacturer, mainly in the overseas sales division. I also had the opportunity to work in the United States as a sales & marketing. Through these experiences, I often found myself explaining Japanese history and culture to people from different backgrounds. This helped me realize how important it is to communicate clearly and from the listener’s perspective—an insight that ultimately inspired me to become a tour guide. I have always enjoyed meeting new people and engaging in conversation. One of the greatest joys of my work is the opportunity to meet guests from all over the world. I truly value each encounter and strive to cherish the unique connection formed with every guest. My goal is to provide “the most memorable day of your stay in Japan.” Seeing my guests’ smiles at the end of a tour is the most rewarding moment for me. The city I have guided most frequently is Kyoto, one of Japan’s most iconic and fascinating destinations. For many travelers, a visit to Japan would not be complete without experiencing Kyoto. As Japan’s capital for nearly a thousand years and the residence of emperors, Kyoto remains the cultural and historical heart of the country. Its countless temples, shrines, gardens, long-established shops, and traditional restaurants offer experiences found nowhere else in Japan. I worked in Kyoto for over 30 years and have many friends and acquaintances who live there. This allows me to share not only famous sights but also insights into local customs, the Kyoto mindset, and everyday life—elements that are often missed by visitors. Kyoto’s refined and traditional culture, distinct from nearby cities such as Osaka and Kobe, adds depth to any visit and often leaves travelers wanting to learn more. Osaka, by contrast, is a vibrant and dynamic city and the economic hub of western Japan. Its merchant spirit is still very much alive today. Famous for its street food, lively neighborhoods, and eye-catching signage, Osaka offers a modern energy that is quite different from Kyoto. Once you start exploring, you may easily lose track of time. Kobe is a sophisticated port city nestled between the sea and the Rokko mountain range. With beautiful views from both the harbor and the mountains, its Western-influenced architecture and elegant atmosphere set it apart from Kyoto and Osaka. Recent waterfront developments have made the area especially lively and enjoyable. Nara, which served as Japan’s capital before Kyoto, is a smaller and more tranquil city. Despite its size, it is home to many historically significant sites, and its calm atmosphere allows visitors to truly feel the presence of Japan’s ancient past. Shiga Prefecture, where I live, has its own unique charm. It is home to Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan, surrounded by mountains that create landscapes quite different from those of Kyoto or Osaka. Although only about 10 minutes by train from Kyoto, Shiga has long been influenced by Kyoto’s culture and is rich in historic temples and shrines. The scenery created by Lake Biwa and these sites is truly worth experiencing. Lake cruises and well-maintained cycling roads along the shore are also popular, and I personally enjoy cycling around the lake. With extensive guiding experience in Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, Nara, and Shiga, I can offer tours not only to popular landmarks but also to quiet, less-crowded locations and hidden gems, carefully selected to match your interests.
