Hi. My name is ChrisP and thank you for taking the time to read these pages. My first visit to York with my wife changed our lives completely and forever. Following a walking tour of the city, we were so impressed by what we had seen that we made it our goal to move here, eventually fulfilling our dream and now proudly calling York our home. With our family leaving the nest (and no longer having to be Dad's taxi service!) I could develop my passion for guiding. I'd been guiding in the city for some time but could now take my research even further. You might be able to see by the tours that I offer where some of those interests lie. My other love is sport - various activities being played to questionable levels but, in the best of British traditions, I believe that taking part is more important! My tour guiding started some years ago and I have been pleased to represent different organisations and tour companies operating in the city. My experience covers a wide spectrum of visitor activity; individuals, small and large groups, and coach and railway tour parties - all from various meeting points and with quite different requirements and expectations. I have also developed a series of presentations, each based on a walking tour of the city. These are all fully illustrated and delivered to organisations and groups, including Rotary Clubs, history groups, and other local and national organisations. If you look at the tours available from me, you will see that I have included a virtual tour and would be more than happy to discuss this further should you wish. York is unique. I love the opportunity to show visitors the city; not just the obvious and traditional, but also the hidden gems which are only known to a few. I believe York embodies the very best of England - a heritage unequalled anywhere else. Should you be unable to find a tour outline to fit your needs please contact me and we can develop accordingly. Come to York, I guarantee you will not be disappointed! Over 10years of guiding experience throughout the City for individuals and groups, large and small. Admission charges for the many available attractions we have in the City are not included. Having said that admission to the National Railway Museum is, at the time of writing, free of charge.

Overview of your York tour

The popular series of books which led to the internationally known TV series was created by Alf Wight, based on his experiences as a young vet in North Yorkshire. We start at the James Herriot Museum in Thirsk, which is housed in the very building Alf practised in and worked from. You will recognise each room as you wander, even the old black car is there. From Thirsk we shall travel to the wonderful remains of Byland Abbey, a 12thC. Abbey. Here you will have the opportunity to explore the site. From here we shall travel to the wonderfully dramatic setting of Rievaulx Abbey for a photo opportunity. Next we shall visit St Gregory's Minster, an Anglo Saxon church in the most idyllic of locations. Farndale will be our next stop, this world famous valley is covered with wild Daffodils in spring time and you have the opportunity for a country walk. This is a level walk beside a stream in a beautiful setting. If time permits we shall stop in Pickering on the return journey and explore some of its attractions.

Let me begin by stating that we loved York, Castle Howard and the North Yorkshire Moors. The history, architecture, archeology and the stories shared by Chris, our guide, brought the city alive for us. We spanned 2000 years in 8 hours and loved every minute and every stop along the way. Chris was warm, welcoming, informative and set the perfect pace to a very ambitious day of touring. The greatest compliment I can give a guide is that they make you feel at home in their home and hold you captive throughout the tour. Chris succeeded on every level. As I stated earlier, we loved York. Thank you, Chris!

Chris exceeded our expectations of what we were going to see. He was so informative about the sites and towns we visited. One of the highlights was his suggestion to do the “Daffodil Walk.” We would highly recommend Chris and any of his tours.

CJ is a very knowledgeable tour guide. He really knows the area. He was helpful to us when planning our adventures. He seemed a bit peeved that we didn’t use him for all of our tours of the area - but how were we to know?

If you are an All Creatures Great and Small fan, this tour is for you! Chris was so accommodating in meeting our wishes and made our tour so special. He has a wonderful sense of humor and the three of us really enjoyed our tour!

Chris was knowledgable and a lot of fun. He was down to earth, which is what I hoped for and what I think everyone would want, for a genuine experience. He was a local! He also took the initiative to set up a visit to a monastery, which we mentioned we would like. When we finished an event on the tour, he informed us that he had set it up for us! Great service!

Your York tour itinerary

- The All Creatures Great and Small Museum in the town of Thirsk - The church where Alf Wight was married - Byland Abbey - Dales and moors of the North Yorks Moors National Park - The ruins of Rievaulx Abbey - Pickering and its attractions - St Gregory's Minster The filming locations for the TV series are spread over many varied locations, all of which are a long way from Thirsk and even further from York. This tour does not concentrate on these locations but instead will showcase the beautiful countryside of the North Yorkshire Moors, some of its many varied attractions, villages and towns. Please note that the admission charges for the attractions are not included and would have to be paid on the day.
