Ninth Generation Nashvillian who is an expert on all things Nashville including Country Music, Civil Rights Woman's Suffrage, Architecture, Business history, Higher Education history, Business history, Sports, and local museums. I have lived in Nashville my entire life and I am seen and the go to person for Nashville history and tours. I am a Historian and have the largest private collection of Nashville memorabilia and many are currently on display at the Parthenon. I was named "Best Nashville Historian" in 2018 but the Nashville Scene. I am a frequent writer and speaker of Nashville history and have talking about Nashville history in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, NPR All Things Considered and on PBS American Masters. My family has been in Nashville since its founding and was enslaved at Andrew Jackson's Hermitage and John Overton's Travellers Rest. I give tours to VIPs, YPO Groups, elected officials, school groups, conventions, travelers, family reunions and I also provide Step On Guides for Bus Tours. I enjoy taking people to some of my favorite buildings like the Ryman Auditorium, The Parthenon, Tennessee State Capitol and the Country Music Hall of Fame. I was involved in programming the Civil Rights Room and the Votes for Women Room in the Downtown Library which are also my favorites. I cannot speak highly enough about David Steele Ewing's tour of Nashville. He made both the overall city history as well as its musical heritage come alive for us. David's connection, as a lifelong resident of Nashville, to the city's many cultural and historical institutions was invaluable in helping us appreciate this amazing place. David is amazing! He has such a wealth of knowledge about the history of Nashville and of Tennessee more broadly that we learned more than we could have imagined. He was generous with his time and took us to see key sites in the city. We had a wonderful time with him and strongly recommend choosing him for a Nashville tour. We felt like we made a friend who shared his life experiences with us.
At our request David gave a much broader overview of Nashville than the description cited, and drove us since one of us has ankle issues. He was delightful to be with for hours, and makes history and current issues interesting with inside knowledge and stories, such as him meeting Aretha Franklin, the last vote cast for women's right to vote, the challenges of managing a rapidly growing city. We've had many 'city tours' in the US and abroad and this rates among the best.
We had the good fortune of connecting with David on our trip to Nashville. As first time visitors, we were interested in a general history including but not limited to slavery, civil rights, women's suffrage, history of country music, and of course food. I am confident there is no better representative of Nashville than David. He is just the loveliest person, a talented historian and offers deep knowledge and passion for his city. It is remarkable what we were able to learn together in 4 hours.
The tour will begin in front of the Ryman Auditorium in the heart of Downtown Nashville on the oldest street in the city. We will walk the downtown area seeing famous sight, unique architecture and learning the story of Music City, its famous bars and the great singers and songwriters who made history in Nashville. I am very flexible to customize the focus of the tour to include specific topics and interests and people. When you contact me please ask about specific areas of interest.
