Nashville's history - that's my game. What is or even what will be has never captured my imagination quite like what was. I've lived here in what is often called "music city" nearly my entire life. I've never wanted to live anywhere else. I'm always excited to show our visitors and new residents around the place, my kind of town with a rich and varied historic legacy. There's more to Nashville than music, as important as that now is. Since I was a boy I've walked the Nashville battlefield and imagined the soldiers at war here. When I was nine years old I went with my family to the Vanderbilt stadium to hear President Kennedy. I live in a "historic" neighborhood in a house built nearly a hundred years ago. Only a few years ago I witnessed the devastation of the Great Flood. Nashvilles history has been, in large part my own history. Its in my blood and very much alive. For years friends and family would laugh and say: "Jim! You should be a tour guide. . or a history teacher. " So let me show you around and give you an experience you won't forget! -Lifelong history buff and Nashville resident. -Hold a Masters degree from Vanderbilt University. -Eagle scout and twenty plus years as a registered BSA adult leader where I've been the defacto tour guide on various USA high adventure experiences. -Have participated for over forty years in various Living History events relating to the Revolutionary and Civil War. -As a remodeling contractor I've worked on many local historic structures becoming familiar with the architectural development and growth of Nashville. -I've written over sixty history related articles in my history blog. Most concern local history.

This is an auto tour, a broad overview of our city's history starting with the first settlement on the Cumberland River. We'll view key sites where history was made, notable places within and just outside the downtown area such as Fort Nashborough, "Lower Broad", the Ryman Auditorium, site of the 1960 Civil Rights "sit-ins, " the state capital building, statue of Chet Atkins, the Bicentennial Mall, the North Nashville "Germantown community", and much more. Many photo ops along the way. Tour price includes pickup and return.
The tour will begin at the old town center, or public square now the county courthouse area, then down first ave by the river, continue to lower broad, up 5th ave to capital hill, a NW look at the capital, then North past the Bicentennial Mall to old Germantown, a turn to the West and a look at Fisk you and MeHarry Med School, then to 12th ave and a brief stop at the Marathon Motor works, a hop onto the interstate and a visit to the old city cemetery and the final stop at Fort Negley (city park). Your driver-tour guide will drive as slowly as possible particularly past certain key sites as the state capital and the Ryman but parking is VERY difficult to obtain on the street and there is not sufficient time to do the parking garage routine still we will be able to pause and duck out of the traffic for a few minutes and park briefly at certain places along the way especially the riverfront. Sometimes we get lucky on parking there. Restroom facilities are available at the Marathon Motor Works and Fort Negley.
Tell your guide which places matter to you, skip what doesn't, and tailor the experience for your group's needs. Not finding what you want? Message your guide to build something unique.
